iron supplement problems - TMI

Recommended Posts

I have been on Iron supplements for several days because my hemoglobin is only 10.1, and it needs to be higher prior to surgery. The supplements are making me miserable. I have irritable bowel syndrome and they are giving me a lot of gas, gas pains and pretty bad diarrhea. Does anyone have any recommendations for a different brand or formulation? I am just taking vegetarian tablets from CVS.

There is a brand of Iron called Slow FE that is supposed to be gentler on the stomach. I believe it is time released. I took it whil pregnant years ago. Good luck

I had a hmg of 9 before surgery. Slow fe killed my stomach. I ended up needed Iron infusions because supplements didn't work for me. I hope you find something that helps you.

If it comes down to it can you get an Iron infusion? Would hate to have you postpone your surgery

I had the same issue with Iron deficiency prior to surgery and my Doc prescribed 2 Iron infusions. I went to the hospitals infusion center and they give you an IV and it takes about 2 hours - i did that twice and numbers came back up to safe territory. My Doc said if i just did supplements it would take months. Not sure if the infusions will upset you as much as supplements but at least its quicker and possibley more effective. good luck.

Thank you all for the ideas. I will talk to my doctor about Iron infusions. I really need to find something that I can tolerate post-op because I know it will only get worse after the sleeve. If you can't tolerate the oral iron, can you get periodic iron infusions? If so, how often would you need them?

I was told I shouldn't put my stomach through the problems i had preop so early on (almost 3 months post op). I am in the middle of a series of 8 infusions. I had to go to a hematologist in order to get the infusions.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
