Starting day 3 post op - am I behind schedule?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I just underwent surgery Monday, 6/10/13. Tuesday felt pretty good up until around 4pm when I felt very crappy! Wasn't sure if it was pain or nausea. Lasted for quite a while. I think it was the air/gas that they fill you with for surgery trying to find an escape route! Not pleasant!

Anyway, yesterday was my first full day home. Not sure the plan you were all advised to follow, but I am supposed to be getting in up to 64 oz Water and 50-60g Protein. Yesterday only make it to about 25g Protein and about 10 oz Water.< /p>

Woke up in the middle of the night with a pretty good headache. I'm assuming that is because I'm probably a bit dehydrated.Going to try my best to get as much water and protein in me today as I can.

Was this normal for all of you that are beyond this stage, or in this stage with me?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

At 3 days post op, I probably got a little more Water and a little less Protein than you list but close. I'm 13 days post op and I'm still struggling to get all my protein and water but it gets a little better each day. You are doing great and know that each day, you will feel just a bit better and be able to do a little more!!! :)

Hi Sue:

Congratulations on your surgery. It is normal for you not to get it all in the first few weeks or so. You are swollen and recovering But.. You have to try really hard with your liquids. You don't want to get dehydrated, which you know. I found in the first week warm liquids went down easier, so I had more herbal tea/unjury chicken Soup than plain Water. To this day, I can drink Vitamin Water Zero easier than plain water. Find what works best for you. Good luck!

Yesterday I felt awful too. I drank all of my fluids and got all of my Protein in. I did not get all of my calories in, but I am working on that today. I am able to count my protein as fluids and protein, so that is helping me a lot. I felt like I was sipping all the time yesterday. Just keep trying and you will get it in. I was banded 6/10/13 too.

Hi Sue, Jerseygirl is right on. Liquids the first week is priority #1. However you can get it in. You also might try no sugar added popsicles. During my first few days I was able to get down just slightly warm liquids the best. Unjury broth is great, or even chicken bullion in warm Water. Sip, sip, sip....that's your main job, plus a little walking. Congratulations on your choice of a new and healthier life.,,,you'll do just fine. Sherri

good to hear! right now, make SURE you put liquids ahead of Protein. Your body can handle a week or two without the Protein, but not enough fluids will land you back in the ER faster than you think. I'm sure it's not a place you want to end back up! My first day home post op I got in 30 oz and the 2nd day I got in 40, by day 3 I was able to hit my 64 oz goal. It took me until almost 4 weeks post op to be able to get in about 70 oz a day.

You are doing better than I do some days and I will be month out tomorrow. My NUT said to worry about fluids first, protein second for the first week or two because you can live off your fuel storage, but you can't live without fluids. Hydrate!!!

Thank you all so much for your input. It really helps to know that I'm not that far off base! Water is definitely going down a lot easier today.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
