help.. primary vs secondary ins

Recommended Posts

Hi all.. Im confused and frustrated. I have a primary and a secondary insurance. First I was told that neither required the medically supervised diet, so I thought I was good to go... I thought I'd be having surgery in a couple of months. Now another insurance rep for my primary is saying that I DO need to do a 6 month supervised diet. Does anyone know if I can just use my secondary insurance so I can have surgery soon.

Sorry to say, probably not. The secondary will only cover what the primary wont cover depending on your plan. They will still require you to go through your primary company first and meet their requirements....wish I had better news. I have been in the insurance field for over 25 years and it has always been this way.....but there is a first time for everything. You could always contact your 2nd directly and ask them. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I just want a straight forward answer. If I have to do the 6 months of weigh ins.. Fine, but do I have to or not. I'm sure you know the run around you get with these insurance companies

I have a primary and secondary insurance. My primary required 3 months supervised diet and the secondary required 6 months supervised diet. I had to do all 6 months even though my primary didn't require it. I am paying out of pocket for the 3 months that went beyond my primary since my secondary has a big deductible to meet before they pay. I just finished my 6th appointment on Tuesday. Honestly the 6 months was worth it for me and it flew by. I'm not having surgery until August as a personal decision though.

@Brenda0928. Question: I have Cigna as a primary and BCBS of Illinois as a secondary. When I called BCBS to ask about their coverage is seemed like there were alot of loopholes. I was wondering if I had the option to only use my primary insurance instead of using both.

Sorry just saw this, feel free to private message me if I don't reply on the future.....you might be able to use just your primary coverage and pay any difference but it does not work the other way around.....meaning you could not use only your secondary.....let your dr and primary know that you may not use the secondary to see if there are any limitations or price breaks...there is not usually any rule saying you "have to" use the secondary.......good luck!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
