My band being removed. I'm trying to decide.. Sleeve or Bypass?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon is going to do a band removal and revision. He's letting me decide if I want the sleeve or bypass. I'm confused.. Help! Why is the sleeve better? Just looking for some thoughts and opinions.

I was told by my surgeon that IF you were successful with the band, the sleeve will work for you, too. But if you tend to want to eat a lot of sweets and things that were NOT stopped by the band, then maybe bypass would be better (for the dumping and the fact that you won't absorb everything you eat).

I chose the sleeve because I did get to my goal weight with the sleeve. Plus, I'd like to minimize changes to my "innards" as much as possible. I'm already minus a gall bladder, appendix, and now part of my stomach! LOL!

food for thought (*insert knee slapping laugh), some people can experience dumping like symptoms with the sleeve too.

I think it depends on how drastic you want your life to change. After awhile with the sleeve you have to have your own self control. The bypass forces you to have self control forever.

Actually, the bypass doesn't give you control forever. My sister-in-law lost 145 lbs. after bypass. Four years later she had gained 160lbs. I'm choosing the sleeve.

I'll tell you why I'm choosing the sleeve.

I'm anemic...with the bypass they'll be bypassing the area where Iron is absorbed and since I already can't absorb iron...bad idea.

Also I'm super paranoid about stomach cancer because I think my great-grandma, who I never met may have died of stomach cancer...that's what we're suspecting (long story lol) and with the part of the stomach that's just hanging out in you and not being used....there's no way to do an endoscopy so if something's growing in there, the only way to detect it is with a PET/CT scan which would be done yearly. Lets say I do one in December and something starts growing in me the following January....needless to say....bad idea.

Everyone has to analyze their own health and health concerns in order to decide what's right for them. I don't think it's a matter of which is better, it's a matter of which is better for you.

Good luck

I did band revision to sleeve 4 days ago. Majority are having sleeve in my area. They only do bypass for the extreme obese so it really wasn't an option for me and I was fine with that. :)

She did at first, but after maintaining her loss for a year, could eat or drink as much as she wanted with no problems. Her doctor said her pouch from bypass can stretch if you don't take care. She is on a supervised diet now and losing well.

I hope you are asking on the RNY Talk board too. It is a sister of this site and you should get both sides.

My Doc does both & all I know is every time I go to my Doc's office there's at least 1 or 2 by-pass patients in for a revision from a complication. I'm just glad I chose the sleeve.

Hey I have a very good friend who had the RNY in 2004 and she NEVER had any symptoms with dumping. DO NOT use dumping as the ONLY reason for you to choose between the two surgeries. You may have dumping or you may not with either surgery,

Please be well informed. I agree with checking into the RNY sister site too

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
