To tell or not to tell

Recommended Posts

A month ago I applied for a new position within my company it is a few steps higher than where I am but I qualify for it based on my newly achieved bachelors degree however the I finally got called for an interview I will be interviewing and they are saying they want to fill the position quickly which usually means it's a busy position and they can't afford to have it take it for long with this in mind I am worried about telling them about my surgery which Should be getting scheduled for the end of July early August do I tell or do I wait I am worried that if I tell it also have a time's my chances of possibly doubling my income

I am using talk to text so some things are unclear I did not mean that it needed to be taken long but that they would not want it to be vacant for long

How long do you plan to be out for surgery?

If I understood the question right, you don't have the job yet and are wondering if you should tell them before they hire you. My answer is a resounding "No." Take the job if offered and then put in for leave for the surgery.

I wholeheartedly agree w No Time. I just finished Sheryl Sandberg's book "Lean In" and she says that all too often women start to "lean out" when career opportunities arise because of life events (kids, marriage, etc) that aren't even a reality yet. Go for it! It is admirable that you are thinking of your employer's needs/wants ahead of your own, but in the big scheme of things, this is a blip on the radar...and you can still show your commitment and loyalty AFTER you have the position by figuring out what you can do to make your absence easier.

It's in the same company - there's no way to keep it a secret. They should not have a problem.

I would say absolutely nothing until you have been offered, accepted and started the new position.

I think it is good to show your eagerness of wanting the job with them, but also negotiate it "sort of", ask them, stating ....I have a previously planned upcoming personel event and I need to take a designated time off, "Would this put the promotion at risk?, I really would not want to do that." They will appreciate your honesty and calculate it into your transition time. I have seen that work. Much better then a false start, where you start, then leave soon, then return. They may think that you aren't as devoted. Just my opinion.

Hi Patti,

Since you are already with the company, I would inform them of a surgical procedure that you would have to do for your health. You don't have to go into details. Meaning of doing this is to let them know ahead of time and when the date comes they will not get up set because you are taking maybe a week off. You want to be professional about it :))

Well, i get up to 13 weeks paid through my company's short term disability. If I dont get the job I am taking every bit because I am not liking my current position (I am used and abused) but if I do get it I probably will only need 3 weeks...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
