Why do people make this commitment, risk their lives on a surgery table and then...

Have a friend who had the sleeve 2 weeks after me. He went to a different doctor and has a different plan. He is doing horrible...drinking...eating McDonalds, etc. he also stopped going for his checkups then he sees me - down 120 pounds in 7 months and keeps telling me I am losing to quickly...not eating enough...not healthy, etc. really getting annoying and I want to tell him off but he's my customer and I can't. Lol!! Some people think this is an instant cure and it's far from that. It's hard work.

I would simply explain that you are following what your doctor wants you to do, and both your doctor and yourself are satisfied with the results. If he can't be happy for you then I would not even discuss it with him at all, customer or not. :)

I followed what my surgeon said to a certain degree. The fact remains, the sleeve is a lifestyle change. I adapted it to fit my needs, and I am seeing results to this day. I think to each their own. Obviously I don't advocate eating a burger 2 weeks out and then freaking out about the ability to do so. But certain touchy things, like alcohol, are something that you will have to make your own call on. I think of them as post op guidelines, not rules. Plus, being 100% strict will only hit you that much harder when you slip once vs allowing smaller portions of things. I've had different types of foods than what I am suppose to, though I am almost 6 months out. But, how would I know what I can tolerate and what I cannot without trying them? I think the basics, Protein first, Water, exercise, track, Vitamins are a must. after that, its your call.

I agree with this thread a billion times over. It gets under my skin!! Research is imperative for such a life changing surgery! And the risks! People started solids too early...yeesh...some of us did everything by the book and still had leaks! I fear the sleeve is becoming more of a cosmetic procedure in our society.

I agree some got mad at me for saying this exact thing .. I said some ppl got the sleeve to be healthy so there taking all steps to do so then u have those who are wanting to be skinny but still doing everything that's unhealthy to each it's on but they got mad at the truth

I inquired about this same thing it was said that this question was like a lean person asking why we can't just stop eating. It's not even in the same ballpark. It's nice to know I'm not alone in the dugout.

Refuse to realize the importance of following their surgeon's orders? If my doctor tells me to stand on my head and consume only Pork rinds for a month' date=' I'm going to do it. If he tells me to drink only purple and pink sparkly liquids for a month, I'm going to do it.

Doctors don't just make this crap up to be sadists, they do it for a reason. Yes, we know our bodies better, but they know the health of our new pouches better.

Can they be wrong? Sure! Can they be overly cautious? Without a doubt! Can leaks happen anyways? Unfortunately. That said, I am going to follow the instructions given and not come here seeking permission to do differently. I am certainly not going to get pissy when people tell me to follow doctor's orders. What's the point?

Phew. I feel so much better.[/quote']

This is why so many people fail at the lifestyle change- because they think that the weight will just fall off- its a lifetime commitment- not a fad diet. People are treating it as such and are instantly set up for failure. That's why there are to a of people now SO unsatisfied with the sleeve!

I listened and researched my sleeve surgery and every aspect of it- and was successful in changing my habits- And my lifestyle.

Same with my plastics I had one year from my sleeve- my surgeon was and is amazing ( Dr Hugo Neibles ) Niebles .... But if I didn't so everything he told me to do- I would be a messy failure! I take things seriously.

It was a serious issue to me- not just a passing thing.

Or even manage to follow the two week PRE op diet!

Totally agree, OP! Thanks for saying what many of us feel. It's just not worth the risk.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
