Taking pills post-op?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I am ten days away from my VGS. YAY! I take prescription medication twice a day in a time release pill form. (meaning I can't just open the capsule up and ingest the powder)

Please tell me that I will be able to continue taking them in the few days following surgery....

Hello dear...I am 11 days post op and am able to take my pills. I crushed them at first but once I got uses to sipping liquids I am able to slide the pills down my throat. One of them I do have to cut in half. I suggest you buy a pill crusher and pill splitter. You can also ask your doctor if there is a liquid and/or a dissolvable alternative to your meds...you'd be surprised how many have that option. Good luck!! Definitely takes some getting used to.

May 7...here I come!!

I have one large/long time release pill that couldn't be stopped suddenly and I was able to take from second day with a minimum of Water. No problems for me. Good luck!

They gave me all of my meds in the hospital, and I haven't had any problems swallowing them. I do cut the large one in half, but it is not time released. Give your pharmacist a call and see if there are other forms of the medicine available. Then call your doc and let them know what the options are. Doctors have too many meds to keep track of, so I would do some of the legwork for them.

But warning: I used to take my meds first thing in the morning with Water. I took them after Breakfast post-op, but I found myself forgetting them until afternoon due to the routine change. But on post-op day 17, I decided to get back in the habit of taking the meds first thing in the morning - and I was nauseous all day. Really made for a miserable day. Right now, I am back to taking them after Breakfast. But in a while, I will try to take the in the morning with one or two crackers.

Have not had a problem swallowing pills but I do wait a bit if I have to take 2 at one time.

Before surgery I was swallowing 9 pills a day for bp,diabetes,etc...plus 15 units of insulin. Of those 9 Dr sent me home from the hospital only taking 2 and 7 units of insulin!! Will re-evaluate at my 2 week appt.

Check with your doctor... My surgeon asked me to bring all of my meds with me to my pre-op so he could check the pill sizes, etc.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
