Low Caloric Intake

Recommended Posts

Ok I need help. I was sleeved 4/30/13 and I'm on puréed foods. I find it so hard to get all my nutrients in. I was in the hospital for dehydration Thursday. Today I had less than 300 calories. I'm trying to eat the 5 small meals in my diet plan, the 2 Calcium tablets, 3 Multivitamins and the 40-60 grams of Protein Shakes. It's too much for my small tummy. Getting in my Water is hard too. I need help and advice. I eat a little and stay full for hours. I don't want to end up like the other people sick with malnutrition. The tingling sensation I had from my diabetes returned today. I was taken off my metformin and my blood sugar was fine the 1st week of surgery. I'm worrying and feeling like did I make the right choice. I'm so close to my goal weight. It's so bad I was wishing I can get back my stomach lol. Please help.

Sorry to hear this. I don't always feel hungry, but I still eat to make sure I get in enough calories and fluids. If you can't eat the meals then drink the Protein Drinks because it should go through your sleeve quicker than food. And you really need to try and get in all your fluids. I'm sure you don't want another visit to the hospital for fluids. Good luck.

Thank you. I'm trying to. I'm still learning all this. This site is helping me so much. I will try my Protein Shakes like you suggested.

Try having more Soup....that way you get your liquids in along with some calories. I would go to places and order Soup or chilly strained and add cheese for Protein. The pureed stage was horrible. I was on two days and the doctor moved me to soft foods. I realized the more I drank trying to fulfill my liquid requirements I was missing my caloric intake

I am having the same problem. Sleeved on 4/16/13. I am pretty much just on Protein Shakes and I always have a water bottle with me so I can sip. If I eat purée food I won't come even close to my Protein goal. I can't even finish a whole egg. I try to have two shakes and two- three "meals" doesn't always work out though.

I had a hard time getting down the shakes...cut down on the sipping. Your stomach is still swollen at this point. Add some low-fat milk to your drinking.

Thank you all for your advice. I will take it all in consideration. This is hard and taking a toll on me mentally.

My go to was sugarfree pudding. It helped me so much. Take your favorite sugarfree instant pudding. Mine is chocolate. Take 1 and 1/4 cup(10oz ) of skim milk. Add a scoop of Protein powder. I have used chocolate, vanilla and unflavored. ( I am a big fan of the Unjury) Blend the milk and Protein Powder, then add the pudding. I divide into to bowls and chill. It is about 15 grams of Protein, and about 175 calories which you really need right now. In the beginning, I added two scoops which took the calories up 50 and the protein up to 25 grams! You would be surprised how much better you will feel. Also, with it being a soft food, it's easier to get it down and doesn't make you feel overstuffed.

This helped me so much so I hope it helps you!

I still have a low calorie problem. I'm afraid to over do it with food. I tend to do Protein Shakes when I need extra calories. They're always packed with them and Protein is always a plus

Take it easy on yourself. At 15 days out, you don't need to worry too much about your caloric intake, hydration is far more important. The other posters have given some good suggestions on Soups, shakes, etc. I would only add that there are higher calorie foods you can eat to up your calories, Peanut Butter with a Water and Protein Powder mixed in counts as a puree. Good luck!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
