finding the right amount of calories to lose 1-2 LBS a week

Recommended Posts

hi guys. I am frustrated. How many calories per day is everyone netting in order to achieve 1 LB-2LB per week weight loss? I cant figure this out for the life of me and It's starting to really depress me. I use myfitnesspal religiously. I have it set at 1,100 calories per day. I exercize and win another 200-450 per day depending on the workout and the length of time I exercize. Anyhow, I have no trouble eating 1,100, also no trouble getting in 70-90 grams of Protein. So why am I not losing weight? too many calories? too little? what gives? Preop diet weight was 286 LBS, I had my sleeve on 2/22. I was 271 on surgery day which was 13 days later. Today I am 228 LBS. I realize that I have made HUGE weight loss, 60 LBS is nothing to be sad about, it's only been 15 weeks, but this recent stall is really hard to push through. I have been up and down from 231-228 for 3 weeks now. Trying to press through this and hit my initial goal of being at 220 LBS by my birthday which is June 10th. At this pace I will be there by the end of summer not in 6 weeks.

I had my surgery done on Jan 30th and I'm lucky to get in 5 or 600 calories a day. I can only eat a few bites before I'm too full. Maybe your getting to many calories too soon

I was the same weight as you were before and at surgery time. I was losing quite a bit every week up until I hit the 230's. Just like you, I had about a 3 week stall and it seemed like forever before I was able to get below 228. Once the stall was over, I started losing 2-5 pounds a week, again. I'm at 215 now. Just because your body stalls a while does not mean you're doing anything "wrong". The human body needs time to adjust to so much weight loss in such a short amount of time. People don't realize that just because you're doing something "healthier" now, doesn't mean that your body is "healthy" in the middle of it. Your body is in shock and needs time to adjust. That's a lot of the reason why we "stall" in weight loss. 1,100 calories a day is perfect, especially with exercise! I've been heavily educated on this and I am confident to tell you that if you eat less than 1,100 calories a day, you aren't going to lose the weight as fast as you want and also, anything less can get you malnutrition REAL QUICK. Sounds to me like you are right on track with no reason to complain. Yes, stalling in weight loss is frustrating. We all know that but it didn't take you a few months to gain that much weight and it needs to come back off at a reasonable speed to keep you healthy. If you want to try and speed things along a little bit, try a harder work out or simply change it up a bit. Another idea is to cut out a few carbs and sugar from your diet than usual. Good Luck to you. I had my surgery on January 14th and my goal was to be under 200 by June 1st. I'm almost there. It's gonna be close but I can tell you that I'm VERY confident that you can meet YOUR goal.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
