How much did you lose on preop diet?

Recommended Posts

How much did you lose and what was diet like--food, length, etc? I'm on Day 8 of 14, 9 lbs down on Optifast shakes/soups only but I have eaten some real food (very high Protein and veg). Just curious. Did you stick to your preop diet 100%?

I lost 50lbs. I started 3 months before surgery, I followed a high protein/ low carb program from the NUT. 3 weeks before surgery I switched to 2 Protein Shakes and 4oz lean Protein and veg for dinner. Yes I stuck to it 100%, I really wanted this surgery, I started at 338 lbs and was just so done with being unhealthy!

I lost 16 pounds over 8 months while waiting for approval. Only 5 of it during the 6 months of supervised weight loss and only 3 during the week of pre-op. I did not exceed 800 calories per day with very low carb. My surgery was uneventful and I have lost 30% of my excess weight (31 lbs) in 12 weeks. No vomiting, no dehydration and so far no Hair loss.< /p>

I lost 100lbs during the six month supervised medical plan required by my insurance. I did not "cheat" nor did I starve myself. I saw the Nutritionist at the surgeon's office and I see the same one now. I wanted this procedure and knew I had to prove that I could handle changing my lifestyle. I weighed 489lbs the day I walked in for my consult and the day of surgery I weighed 389lbs.

I followed a diet like ones I've seen posted here (shakes plus protein/green veggies meal). I lost 12 pounds on that for two weeks and more importantly I found it really easy. A typical day would be 2 slimfast shakes and pork chops with spinach for dinner. Prior to that I lost 17 pounds in the 8 months before surgery just changing some habits. So total I lost 29 pounds.

I didn't follow the diet prescribed by my program (no solid food or Soups of any kind) and I lost weight, but I don't know if I would have been better off following theirs. I think it would have been harder for me mentally but who knows if it might have been better in other ways such as shrinking more fat around the liver.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
