So I need help, I start my 2 week pre-op liquid diet on May 6th. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what Protein Shakes to buy, and also how many shakes I should drink a day. If possible I'm looking for something inexpensive :) also the Vitamins I should start taking, just looking for recommendations on where to buy them(cheap) and brands and stuff like that. Any input is greatly appreciated :)

I honestly haven't had any luck with the shakes, but I have read here that many people like the Walmart brand and GNC Lean...Try to find what you like before surgery; it will make it much easier on you to get your Protein in the first few weeks. My nut/dr advise 2 shakes per day, but everybody's dr is different. I just know I am not getting the Protein in as I should & I would feel better if I was. I am 7 weeks out nearly. Hydration & your protein are essential.

I use the Walmart brand of all the Vitamins nearly. I use the Centrum chewable multi-Vitamin, use the Vitactive (I think that is correct) Calcium chews, and Walmart's Spring Valley brand for all rest.

Best of luck to you.

Everywhere is a bit different with what's available to them. I've been using Trader Joe's brand vanilla soy. It's quick dissolve, and goes down way easier for me than the whey type were. It needs a bit of flavor Syrup, so I usually hit it with a bit of DaVinci sugar free caramel syrup. I'll recommend avoiding Pure Protein.

For whichever type you do try, my NUT strongly advises that the first ingredient on the nutritional list should be either whey Protein isolate or Soy protein isolate. These are going to provide you with the amino acids that your body needs to build protein. Sugar & fat content should be under 5g per serving. For the servings, you'll probably want to consult with your bariatric team. My pre-op diet we had a specific shake type that we bought through the hospital. I had 3 shakes a day, which added up to 600 calories. Some folks drink 5 shakes per day. It varies.

I agree Wth Luckysmomma on all counts! I buy the chocolate Whey Isopure at Walmart , none of them taste good in my opinion, but if u have a little blender, you can just add one cup of Water and 2 tbsp of creamy p-nut butter and blend it. It makes it thicker and easier to drink. Be sure to drink at least 64oz of fluids per day as well. The only thing I'd add to her list is Biotin a Vitamin for hair and nails...

Good luck :)

I drink premier shakes ... each are 11 oz and 30 grams of Protein. I buy them at costco. I take calcium chews also bought at costco. And Centrum multi Vitamin chewables... bought at Walmart. I drank 2 shakes a day and ate one small. a few days before surgery i went to just liquids, Jello, popsicles and broths. Best Wishes on your journey.

I'm still pre-op but I got three variety packs of different kinds of Protein powders. That way I can try a lot of different ones to see what I like before I buy a bunch of expensive tubs that I don't end up liking.

It took a bit of searching but I finally found a site that sells the complete 14 variety pack of the Syntrax Nectars. http://www.smartbodynutrition.com/syntrax-nectar-protein-14-pack-variety.html

I also got a variety pack of unjury. It includes 5 of their flavors and a rubbermaid bottle to shake it up. The thing I liked about Unjury is that it has the chicken Soup flavored. Although, I haven't actually tried it yet, so maybe I won't like it anyway. http://www.unjury.com/store/protein/unjury-protein/unjury-starter-pack/unjury-starter-kit.html

Jay Robb makes an egg white Protein powder so I got a variety pack of those as well. Just to see if I liked those better. However, my post surgery instructions specifically state that the Protein needs to be an isolate so I'm not really sure if this will qualify or not. http://www.jayrobb.com/protein/egg-protein-samples.asp

I have yet to try any of the above but I have tried a few from the health food store and they were just awful! The hemp protein was the most horrific color and taste that I have encountered. They were really chalky and gross. I ended dumping most of them because I couldn't stomach them. I'm hoping the new ones I got are better.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
