I'm exercising,....but....

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 months post-op. So far I have lost 103 pounds. I have also lost a lot of muscle.

I have been using an exercise bike for about 6 weeks. I started doing strength training at a gym 3 weeks ago.

I bike 20 minutes a day. With the strength training, I use ten different machines - five that work on the arms and five for the legs. So far, I do two sets of ten at each machine.

I should mention that I have neuropathy in my feet and walking/running is difficult.

My question is this: My heart rate isn't increased at either activity. Is this a problem? Do I need to sweat to experience a benefit from this exercise?

Sweat isn't necessarily a requirement, and neither is doing sustained cardio. But if you aren't breathing heavy during the resistance training you're not using enough weight. You should have difficulty finishing the last set. If not, add more resistance, or add another set but it should still be difficult to finish it. Same with the exercise bike. Here's where your heart rate should definitely be up. You should be able to talk but not sing....that's the old saying. If your heart rate isn't up you need to increase the resistance, the speed, the duration or all 3.

But the fact that you're exercising is great. Keep it up.

Another important thing is to make sure you are getting enough Protein. Without enough protein you will loose muscle mass regardless of your exercise habits.

Great job on the amazing loss! Make sure your Protein is high and u may need to increase the weight. The last set should be tough.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
