Stomach staples? What kind of staple? Can you be allergic to the staples?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what type of staples that are used. I dont want to have a reaction to whatever metal they use..or whatever they use? The reason being..when i was 12.. I had nickel earings and i got an infection in my ears ..same with stainless steel eyebrow ring..so what kind of metal do they use?

The staples are made of surgical grade titanium. The same metal used in hip and knee replacements. A reaction to them is very rare. I had the same concern myself and was all over the internet looking up info. Although I knew this in the back of my mind, i wanted reasurrance.

Yup, surgical titanium. Won't show up on metal detectors or anything of that sort, and unlikely chance to have issues with them once they're inside. Not impossible, especially to someone who has metal allergies such as yourself, but unlikely. Hopefully there won't be any issues. I know when my ears were pierced I used surgical titanium spacers, have you had any titanium in the past?

Nickel allergies are very common. It's less common to have a reaction to surgical steel BUT there are several grades out there and often jewelry SAYS "surgical steel" but it is a lower grade.

When I was a kid I couldn't wear anything with ANY nickel. I couldn't even wear 20K gold because I would react to the other 4K of whatever else was mixed in it. I could only use 24K gold over surgical steel. Even now I can't wear a cheap watch because it gives me a rash.

I went to Mexico and I asked specifically what kind of staples. They use a triple line of titanium staples which is standard pretty much every where.

Earrings cause scabs on my earlobe and I also had my eyebrow pierced when I was a teen and it kept getting infected. My body doesn't like jewelry unless it's a ring. Some necklaces make me break out in hives. I was sleeved over 6 months ago and haven't had any problems with my staples. I don't feel any irritation. I'm sure you will be fine.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
