Just to clarify, MI Doctor is a full service hospital. Be careful what posters say who have not been there. I had my surgery at Mi Doctor Hospital with Dr Fernando Garcia and he is an amazing surgeon. Please research him through Ready4Achange. Care was excellent and I stayed two days in the hospital and three at the hotel; plenty of time to re-coup. I also flew to San Diego and was picked up at the airport for transport. At the time the sleeve alone was $4700.00, I had a revision so I had paid more but not much.

I had Dr Almanza in TJ. The cost was $4750 plus airfare which ended up being $500 RT from DFW on Spirit Air. The clinic is indeed in a strip mall. I had no problems at all and liked Dr Almanza. The staff was friendly and professional. I actually came home the next day. The morning after surgery they took me for a leak test and then removed the drain. 2 hrs later I was at the airport waiting for my flight.

I paid a $500 deposit and had a cashiers check to pay the balance when I got there. While I was doing my paper work at the clinic I decided to buy an insurance policy for $300 that covered anything and everything for 6 months. If I had any problems during that time the insurance covers my travel expenses and any procedures I need related to the sleeve, the surgery etc. It doesn't look like I'll be needing the insurance. Everything is fine.

My surgery is May 3 in Tijuana - Mi hospital with Dr. Cabrera and Valenzula. I am going through Medical Tourism Company. Thus far they have been very good at answering questions from me and my very skeptical husband. My flight is leaving from NC - Charlotte on May 2 and I am coming home on May 6 according to the patient coordinator. I too sat through some seminars through CMC and found out all the hoops you must go through. Even though my insurance covers it, I am still self paying in mexico because its cheaper and less hoops. Also I was pleased to find out that alot of the surgeons in Mexico are more experienced due to Mexico offering the surgery for a longer time. My hubby is a little freaked out that I am going alone but I have been assured I will be safely escorted from the airport to the hospital / hotel and back. And once I get there I should be with a group of people going through the same thing as me so I won't be alone..What I would like to know is what I HAVE to pack with me..I am only bringing a carry on so I would like an idea of essentials other than toothpaste..

Another question lol. How much was your airfare and what website did you go to get the best airfare price?

I booked on Southwest's site directly. Very reasonable. Like previously mentioned, try and book 3 or more weeks in advance. The closer it gets to your departure date, the higher the rates.

I booked my airfare via expedia.com..I was give specific times I needed to arrive and depart the San Diego airport so I couldn't get the cheapest ticket but still only $381 including all taxes..and my surgery is $4500..still less than $5000 over all.

I chose Mexicobariatriccenter to coordinate for me. I had Dr's Valenzuela and Cabrerra.

I stayed in the hospital for two nights post surgery and then at the Marriott hotel for three nights. My package only included a two night hotel stay but I purchased an extra night just in case I wasn't feeling up to travel.

MiDoctor is where I went. It is a hospital. They have an ICU if needed. Patients have private rooms where they recover for two nights post surgery. It is not a clinic. It is not a FULL SERVICE hospital. Right now they pretty much cater to elective treatments.. If you are say, a cardiac patient, they're not going to do a heart transplant there.. you're not going to go there to be treated for an infectious disease.. It's a hospital, but they treat bariatric patients. There are four floors and two (soon to be 3 operating rooms) Go on Youtube and input Mi Doctor Hospital and you can find videos where you can see that it is an actual small hospital and see what the rooms look like.

I can say that I had a fantastic experience. The surgeons were excellent and Christy with Mexico Bariatric Center has really been there for me. I actually just got an email from her checking in on me.

I will give one word of warning though.. If you are meek or not inclined to advocate for yourself and what you want, then you maybe should consider going with doctor where you'll have a bit more hand holding. I received great care at MiDoctor, BUT I was on top of everything.. I asked for my spirometer and started my breathing exercises on my own. I made sure I got my walking in.. I went to the nurse's station hourly and got drinks.. They are not proactive about bringing these things to you but they are happy to get you whatever you need.

How much did everything cost you?

How much did everything cost you?

$4,500 plus $80.00 for an extra night at the hotel plus $400.00 round trip boston-sandiego-boston. Plus about $50.00 for tipping expenses (driver, housekeeping etc)

The $4,500 included ground transportation to and from the airport-hospital-hotel, all surgery costs and hotel. I chose to pay for an extra night at the hotel, but I felt so great it really wasn't necessary after all.

Prices have gone up since then... I think they're currently $4,700?

I agree that your description of Mi Doctor is more apropos than mine. The correct words escaped me.... Buuuuuuuut.... Idk if I'd say that just the meek or those who cannot advocate for themselves need hand holding and may want to look elsewhere. If you're high risk. Have special medical circumstances you may not want your recovery to be in a hotel. A full service/full time hospital recovery may be needed. That wouldn't necessarily mean you're meek or you're a pushover (summarizing). You just require more care for medical reasons and/or peace of mind.

To the best of my knowledge Dr. Aceves and Dr. Alvarez are the only two that offer that. That I know of.

Also how much did the it cost from the moment you sent them your deposit to the day you came home? I need to know how much money to borrow.

Quite right Amanda.. I had no comorbidities or health issues other than being big and fat. I think you were really smart to take your cardiac condition into account when selecting a doctor/facility.

I used Dr. Aceves. His total last I saw was $8750. $500 deposit. The balance due when you arrive.

It includes everything but airfare and your "last meal" the night b4 surgery.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
