Getting family to understand

Recommended Posts

I'm sure other people have had this problem. My dad was against the surgery thing before my lap band, so now, no matter what I say I can't get him to understand why I am doing this revision. I told him that there is no way he could ever fully understand because be has never been over weight. I don't know what else I can to to get him to see that this is what's best for me.

sometimes you can't.. you just have to do what's best for you.. Unless this is a case of him having to fund it..

I originally only planned to tell my mother, step father, one brother, and my sister. .. I know how my father is.. he's negative about everything. I just choose to go with the supportive side of my family, and show him with results that this was the right choice for me.

Biker hit it on the head. If you believe you are doing what is best for you, you may just have to deal with the fact he is not on board. If it is really important to you, maybe bring him to your next visit with your surgeon. He will get the facts, but sometimes when someone's mind is made up, there is nothing you can do but stay as positive a possible.

Good luck.

i posted this same issue a few weeks ago, but the negative nelly was my DH. He didn't understand, and is scared for my safety, but after a few days of arguing, he realized I can't be swayed and now he is being supportive. Time will tell, but only I can make this decision, and only I can make this tool work for me. Good luck and do what you feel is best.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
