Taking medications after surgery

Recommended Posts

I was told as part of my "equipment" I would need for getting ready for surgery was a pill crusher. My question is?

What should I use to mask the aweful taste of most medications? I have heard yogurt but what about honey? Any answers to this topic would be greatly appreciated. And I hope this is in the correct forum.

I started taking regular ol pills on day 2. Not sure why you have to crush anything.

Same here. They gave me my pills at hospital and told me I could start my chewable vitamins too. Remember.. A lot of pills ARE NOT meant to be crushed and can be dangerous to do so. Check w/pharmacist

I wouldn't recommend honey because of the sugar. I have a bunch of pills to take because of my thyroid and anemia. The Pepcid is capsule, and I just pour that into a bit of Water. I choke it down. Sometimes that is just what you have to do. I would say applesauce. Good luck!

I never crushed or broke mine in half either. Started taking them whole the day after surgery. Some meds also should not be crushed or broken.

I have to take prevacid and a huge Iron pill daily and I don't have to crush them. I don't seem to have any issue digesting them at this point.

I never had to crush or half my pills or anything. I could swallow them whole, even ones that weren't necessarily small. No issues. But if your doc says you have to, maybe mix it in some sugar free Jello or even a spoonful of sugar free Syrup.< /p>

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
