In the hospital with Pancreatitis.....is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Woke up yesterday morning feeling fine. About 2 hrs later I started having pain in my upper ab right below the ribs. It radiates around to my back. As it continued to get worse throughout the day I finally called my Sleeve Dr. to make sure it wasn't anything from that. The pain was so intense I finally told my husband to just take me to the ER. Come to find out I have a severly inflammed pancreas and gallbladder. My blood work was very elevated as well. They said this is fairly common in patients after gastric surgery. I don't remember reading that but then again I know I scanned over a lot. Now I sit here in the hospital for the 2nd day with a tube going into my nose down into my stomach. I am getting morphine and zofran every 4 hrs and wishing this was a thing of the past.

Anyone else have this happen to them???

Much later i had 32 days with an NJ tube.....I know this is hard and you just want to be home. One day at a time..it does get better. i have my NJ tube still....i hope you get sleep..ask for something if necessary. cannot get better without recuperative sleep and that is hard to do as in-pt. i hope you feel better and get home soon. you can get through this!!!

I am 3.5 months post op. I HATE the tube. It makes me gag all the time. Not helpful with how I feel.

I have heard of gall bladder attacks from the surgery. My surgeon put me on Antigall for 6 months to prevent post op gall bladder problems.

I didn't have pancreatitis but a leak. I HATED the NG tube. It was one of the worst things about being in the hospital. I'm telling you the removal was the best/worst 3 seconds of my life. Like you, it made me gag so much. I was in zofran, phenergan, toradol, and a scop patch just for nausea. And the morphine. Strict npo for over a month.

If there is any advice I can give you it's this: DO NOT let them send you home without tapering off your pain meds!!! I got 1mg morphine every 6 minutes for a month and they sent me home cold turkey. Almost ended back in the hospital because I was so sick to my stomach.

Good luck! Keep us posted! And soon enough this will all be a thing of the past :)

I have done well for the last month. No issues at all. I am having my gallbladder removed next Tuesday, April 30. I think I'm looking forward to this surgery as much as I was my sleeve! Lol

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
