Words of advice for exercising sleevers!

Recommended Posts

I cant begin to explain how bad i want my sleeve to work, same as most of you I'm sure!

I am a low BMI'r and found out prior to my surgery that I was a diabetic and they wanted me to start on insulin. I said no give me a chance to manage it with diet. I lost 30 pounds before my surgery. Since I was sleeved I have only lost 10-14 pounds it fluctuates. So I start walking because that is what I'm supposed to do right? I get up to 2 miles a day... Still no weight loss so I start walking/running 2 miles a day, still nothing. I then get up to running 2-4 miles 5 days a week and NOTHING!! I log using MFP everything I eat and drink good or bad.

I sent it to my nurse and she said I was doing everything right and for me to keep up the good work that the weight will start to come off. I keep hearing its a stall be patient the weight will come off. I am now obsessed. Which has turned into depression. I actually keep a spreadsheet of my daily weigh ins hoping i would find a pattern.

The only thing the nurse did say was if I was running to increase my carbs to about 100 a day, I never did. I have been going deeper and deeper into depression over all of this.

So about 2-3 weeks ago I got done running and all of a sudden I smelled ammonia.. I didn't stink but my sweat smelled like strong ammonia. It has been going on since then. 2 days ago I decided to google it. Long story short... Since I never increased my carbs every time I was exercising I basically was shutting my body down because I was out of energy and the ammonia smell was a sign I was burning my muscles/amino acids. I'm so worn down I went to bed yesterday at 6pm and never woke up till 10am this morning...

So my words of wisdom that I've learned the hard way is when you start to exercise increase your carbs!!

I'm hoping my weight loss will start someday soon!!

Very good to know!! I will remember that! Up your Water intake too if you can. Don't weight yourself daily, try weekly. Also don't just go by what the scale says. Measure your self too. Working out creates muscle, and muscle is heavy. I bet you're loosing inches though.

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
