Unintended Effects of Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery about 5 months ago and have developed a funny little quirk since then. Whenever I eat and get full, I start sneezing! I suspect that some nerve that runs from my stomach up my throat into my nasal passages must get agitated when my stomach is stretched. It's actually kind of funny how my family knows that I'm full whenever I start having sneezing fits after eating. Does anyone else experience this or any other quirks since your surgery?

LOL thats funny. I have a couple of 'tells' also. After Ive eaten an ounce or so I have a tiny burp and that means that I probably only have room for one more bite so after I eat that bite I get really loud hiccups (they crack my husband up). So once I burp my hubby will say "almost to capacity" then when I hiccup he will say "She's FULLLLLLLLLL!" like you would yell GOAL at a soccer game. He's goofy. I actually love having a signal cause there is no guessing involved, just a loud hiccup that makes people giggle.

Ive heard of others sneezing or their nose getting runny. My quirk is hiccups! My husband always gives me a goofy smile and asks if the tanks getting full! Lol! That's my cue to stop while I'm ahead!

Hiccups here as well....only about four, then they are gone. I also get them if I get really hungry. Very strange.

I also get them when Im hungry. Usually just first thing in the morning but its a quieter hiccup then my "Im full" hiccup. Good thing my hubby now speaks 'hiccup' and can tell if my tank is empty or full lol.

I burp... and not a dainty little ladylike burp either. I wish!

I think that it is fun how we all seem to have internal alarm clocks that go off in burps, hiccups, and sneezes when we get full.

VS on July 24. 255 pounds. January 24 175

My nose has not stopped running is my only complaint. And nothing works for it...Benedryl, Sudafed, Laratadine. Cold weather increases it to the 3rd or 4th power.

Will this resolve itself?

My nose runs!! I didn't catch on right away until my sister said," does your nose run every time you eat?"...duh!! It must be my full signal :)

I start to yawn when I am nearing my max of food. It seems very strange to me, but at least I know when to stop!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
