Yet another newbie thread

Recommended Posts

Hello world.

My name is Yonah, and according to the email I received when joining this forum, it's recommended that I post an introduction thread. I have been overweight/obese all of my adult life. The heaviest I have been is approximately 330 pounds, the least heavy has been about 280 pounds, but my weight has been pretty stable for the past few years at ~300 pounds. I'm strongly considering leaning towards getting a VSG, but I also felt this way a year ago and lost my nerve during the pre-operative checkups, so we'll see I guess.

I am 25 years old, and living with my parents and younger brother in Rockland County, a suburb of NYC. The surgeon that has been highly recommended to me by multiple people is Dr. Ashutosh Kaul, who practices a county away from me (about 50 minutes driving). I met with Dr. Kaul and a few other surgeons and I liked Dr. Kaul and his team the best, so I am probably going to choose him as my surgeon despite the long trips to/from his office. If anyone can recommend some closer support groups, though, that would be great.

I am working on getting a college degree (I got sidetracked due to some serious family issues that took over my life for several years), and I hope to move out on my own as soon as I can. I am very interested in science, particularly biology, and I love learning about pretty much everything.

Anyway, that's quite a bit of information I've just thrown out there, so I'm going to end the post here. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you guys may give :)

Congratulations, sound like you are taking control of your health. I wish I had done my sleeve sooner! Read as much as you can on here and even if your Dr. is not close look for support groups in your local area. Be a sponge right now. I lurked on VST for many months before posting and felt very prepared going into sugery. Still getting the hang of everything since I'm still only two weeks out but again being prepared had made my recovery pretty easy. Use the search field at the top to explore your questions. Best of luck.

Hi, we have the same Dr!

hope to hear more from you about your experience.

I am still doing pre op testing and consultations.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for an early September surgery date.

How is it going for you?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
