Emotional eating after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I'm still pre op But noticed that I am an emotional/ stress eater. For those of you that have gone through surgery already what did you do to handle how did you handle your stress eating and your emotional eating?

Actual hunger seems to be dramatically reduced remember they toss the portion of your stomach that produces gherlin watching others eat and drink a beer or whatever isn't as bad as I thought it would be so far anyway I'm 5 wks out good luck

I'm also a stress eater and am very stressed right now due to my mom being really ill. I am about 10 weeks out and I've done really well sticking to my food plan, except for this last week. It's been pretty easy because my hunger is 80% gone.

I ate a whole pint of frozen chocolate yogurt one day, and then couple days later I ate WAY too many miniature candies a co-worker keeps stocked at his desk for whoever needs chocolate.< /p>

I know I will always have to fight my urge to eat when I'm stressed, but the thing that makes it a lot easier is I'm not also always fighting hunger pains as well, so I feel it's much easier to control. It's also a lot easier to get back on track! :-)

Tell me about it in my 5 short wks I've slipped a couple of Hershey miniature bars theory being well they will melt in mouth and therefore be considered soft? But it is easier the hunger thing don't you think before it would've been half a bag! Of chocolate

I am an emotional eater - I eat more when I am stressed but in general I have always used for for happy/sad/bored/whatever times.

To be honest I didn't think about this before I had surgery but it has not been a problem. Just recently I have started having hunger which makes me nervous - up until this point I have had to remind myself to eat. Having said that I have found that I still have the emotional eating urges but there is no motivation to actually eat since I get full so fast.

I started therapy. It made me realize how much I was using food to suppress emotions. Every emotion I had somehow included food into that feeling. I'm learning to feel without needing the food. I hope that makes sense. It's hard... Really hard but it's getting better.

acid feels like hunger to me

This was a known issue for me and a big part of the reason I got where I am. I do have a counselor that I work with, but this is the way I reasoned it out... The sleeve is my tool to make me STOP and LISTEN to my brain and heart before I act. Physically I cannot consume what I used to (either in quantity or in choices like junk food), so it forces me to actually deal with what's happening in positive ways. I'm only about five weeks out now (wow, the time has flown!) but I'm already testing my reasoning out with some hard deadlines at work that would usually have had me reaching for junk and family problems that would normally have had me binging. Neither of these things are happening now and I'm dealing with the anxiety by planning, general problem solving and writing. I still WANT to do the negative behavior, but I cannot, so I'm being forced to evolve. :)

I don't know if that really answered you... but I guess I can totally relate!

Thanks everyone for your input! Hopefully on e I get sleeved it will be a little easier to deal with because I won't physically be able to stuff myself. Truth be told, the mere act of losing weight may be enough to help me avoid being so stressed!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
