Hurt to swallow?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. My name is Jessica. I was banded in April of 2008 and just had my revision on last Fri (Feb 22nd). I have a question that may have already been asked but here it goes...Does anyone have problems with pain when swallowing? When I had my band in it often hurt to eat/drink and I am getting that same feeling right now. I am not sure if this is caused by swelling as I am still only 4 days post-op or if this is something that I am stuck with. One reason I wanted my band removed was due to the pain when eating. When I had saline removed I lost all restriction. Is this something that will go away once I am better healed? Has anyone had this same issue?

Thank you so much!

Jessica

I had some pain when swallowing right after surgery.. Each day got better and I would say by day 4 it was pretty much gone. Is the pain in your throat or down further? If it's a strep or sore throat pain it could be from when you were intubated. My pain was down further and it was from the swelling. Because you were a revision patient you probably have more swelling.. Give it a few more days and you should feel better...

Good Luck!

Did you have a hiatal hernia repair? I did and it was the source of painful swallowing for about 2 weeks post-op. It went away.

Thank you everyone for your quick replies! My pain is in my "chest" like when my band was too tight. My throat is still sore from the tube but is getting better. I did have a hiatal hernia repair during surgery. Both this one and when I had my band placed. I feel much better knowing that this is something others have gone through. One of the girls at work had the sleeve done about 3 months ago and didn't have this type of pain. I figured it had to do with the band being removed but I thought I would check to get what others went through. I do have a pill I need to take and am a tad worried about it going done. All my docs said to take it. It is cymbalta for fibromyalgia. Hopefully it will go down ok! Thank you all again! :)

Yeah, if you think about the hiatal hernia repair, it makes sense. As my surgeon said to me, "Basically, I had to yank your stomach down through your diaphragm, then sew the diaphragm up tight against your esophogus, so, it is going to be sore for awhile."

Definitely do not crush or open the cymbalta.

I did that and I got so sick.

Best of luck!

All of the above explianations make sense. Also, if I take too large of swallow I have pain in my chest. I am a terrible sipper.

I was a band to sleeve revision in one operation. I had the pain and discomfort you are describing for almost two months. I was les to believe its scar tissue and just takes us that much longer to heal up

I'm 2 weeks out and have pain when swallowing. The pain isn't so much in my throat but rather at the diaphragm level. My husband laughs at me because sometimes the pain is such that I feel like I need to take my bra off cause it's digging in where the pain is. It feels like swallowing a rock and I try to stretch .,myself taller to make it go down.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
