Pre-op Questions/Working Out

Recommended Posts

did any of you start working out prior to having surgery......if so how did it help you after you had surgery, was it easier to drop weight, was it dropping faster, was the loose skin worse or better than what it would have been with you working out prior.....

I haven't started yet, but I just had an appt. with the bariatrician yesterday and she strongly suggested starting to exercise as soon as possible and said she definitely recommends it for surgical success. I hope to be sleeved on 3-20 and she said even 2-3 times per week for just 20 minutes would be good. I plan on getting started next week to incorporate it into my daily routine.

Exercise has been a required part of my pre-op. for three months I've been dragging my behind outbid bed at 5am, at least 3 times a week to go in the elliptical machine that was previously collecting dust in my garage. So far, in about 10 weeks I've lost 27ish pounds by that plus a low cal/high Protein diet. The healthier you are pre-op, the smoother things typically go post-op. and if you build a routine now it's less of a change later on.

yes ....i am working out and i have lost 21 pounds so far....I was just curious to how people have done post surgery if they worked out preop.....i was told to just lose 10 pounds and start changing the way i eat.....working out was not required (at least not specified) but of course you know you have too....

I worked out Pre op for 6 months. I was at the gym 2 hours the day before my surgery. Recovery for me was a breeze. They called me the social director at the hospital cuz every hour I was up walking & visiting with the other surgery peeps. After surgery tho I was surprised how tired (& I mean EXHAUSTED!) I was. But when I was cleared after 6 weeks it was straight back to the gym for me.

I am more toned & my upper arms aren't bad. But I have loose skin on my upper thighs & a stomach flap. I knew that would be an issue & fully plan on plastics. It's easier if you are honest with yourself & accept it.

I'm 5'7

Highest weight: 354

Pre-op diet & exercise (Jan of 12) starting weight: 338

DOS (5-18-12): 288

Current weight: 199

Total lost: 155 pounds from highest

I do not think I have lost any faster than anyone who doesn't exercise (I swear they seem to blow right down to almost goal then start bitching about the last 9 pounds!) I stall. I lose in stair steps. But I think in the long run I am less likely to gain it back cause I'm working hard for this!

Hope this helps!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
