what to expect after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Well for starters I'm a newbie to the site. My surgery is the 19th.as I lay in bed all I have is fear of the unknown after surgery. I think of all of the negative scenarios I've read on here. So what should I expect when I wake up in recovery? And also what should I expect in the first couple days after.

I felt great after waking up out of surgery - they had me up and walking - I was alert and coherant.

The first few days out, aside from feeling like a did 1,000 situps, I was fine.

I had to nap here and there, but - yeah, awesome experience, smooth sailing - haven't stopped smiling.

The noises your stomach will make a few days out will be quite entertaining for those all around you.

You can check out my video blog about my VSG experience on YouTube - the link is in my profile.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Fear of the unknown is healthy. That's just part of the game. Reading too many negative scenarios on here is unhealthy, mostly because from what I've seen, most people are drama queens/kings and over exaggerate things it seems. Everyone is so different. From what I've gathered, expect to be sore, expect to feel nauseated from time to time, and expect to take things really slow at first.

When I woke up in the recovery room, I had some pain, they gave me a shot and I was fine. I had no nausea because i asked the anasthesiologist before surgery to please give me something before i woke up to prevent post-op nausea- she put a patch behind my ear - I HAD NO NAUSEA at all. I was up and walking the night of surgery, went home the next day. I had some diarrhea i from the leak test contrast, but that was it. Low energy for about 4-5 days, itchy incision site, no big deal. Everyone responds differently to pain, surgery, and life changes....do you!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
