How to get in all the food and liquid after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a schedule from the doc or one they have made themselves that enables them to get all your Protein and liquids in a day? To drink 60 oz Water a sip at a time. But not 30 minutes before or after eating. And taking at least 20 min to eat a meal.

I took in one ounce every 15 minutes but I get up pretty early and stay up pretty late, I was also sipping at night when I would wake to use the bathroom. your stomach after a couple of months gets alittle more relaxed and you can sip more at a time, now I have no issues with Water intake at all.

I am still on full liquids and find it easier to add unflavored Protein Powder to my drinks. This helps me to reach my Protein and Water intake goal...sometimes I do fall short :( with the protein if I do not continuously drink throughout the day.

Here's the schedule my dietician gave us for our 3 week post-op diet. It was liquids only so eating didn't interfere with the schedule at all. Don't know when your surgery was so I'm not sure if this applies to your particular situation. You might want to put that info in your profile or signature so people have a better understanding where you are when offering advice ;)

8:00 am 2 oz. high Protein supplement

8:15 am 2+ oz. Water

8:30 am 2+ oz. unsweetened Decaf tea

8:45 am 2+ oz. crystal light

9:00 am 2 oz. high Protein supplement

9:15 am 2+ oz. Water

9:30 am 2+ oz. broth

9:45 am 2+ oz. water

10:00 am 2 oz. high protein supplement

10:15 am continue with above schedule. Sip all day long to maintain hydration.

That was crazy so what I did was to just portion out what I needed for the day and keep it in view so I knew what I needed to accomplish over the day. The key is you should pretty much always be sipping on some liquid to make sure you hit your numbers.

Thanks stef I missed your reply the first time I viewed it.

I'm so afraid I'm still going to be starving after surgery. I'm on my 2 days Clear Liquids before surgery Monday! After 2 weeks Protein liquid...

I'm only 9 days post op so I'm just starting to introduce mushies/softs but even a couple days after surgery I haven't had issue getting my liquid in if I make myself drink. I notice I don't get thirsty like I used to (I used to be a Water *****). But, if I haven't had the issue of needing to sip. My stomach never swelled much so I didn't have that issue thankfully.

I'm out 5 days from surgery now and today I'm finding that the swelling of my stomache must be going down because I was only able to get in about 6oz of Water for the day (painful!) That doesn't include my shakes which I could get in a max of about 3 oz each. This am I drank 6oz of shake!! YAY and already at noon have had 11oz of plain water! It's getting better!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
