I really need to hear from a Vet!

Recommended Posts

I am now 3 weeks out and feel like crap. I went to my surgeon today and he wants to start at home IV fluids. I just can't bear another pic line. My stomach keeps bubbling up and every time I drink slowly about 15 minutes later it starts gurgling up. I'm in trouble if I can't drink!

My surgeon said because of all the surgeries and the infection problem it's taking longer to heal and IV fluids may be the way I have to go for now.

Have any of you gone through this?

I did not have this issue, but getting IV fluids is very common for those who cannot, for one reason or another, get their fluids in. If you had some complications with infections which is delaying the healing process, you definitely do not want to compound the issue by being dehydrated. You are doing the right thing by staying on top of this. Just do what they suggest and know this is just a minor blip on your road to recovery.

If you're having such a hard time right now, I'd take the IV fluids without hesitation. It would take the stress out of the whole fluids thing. You could probably relax and just concentrate on getting better....

Just so there is no confusion ... through IV or mouth?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
