First day of pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Today is my first day of pre-op I will have surgery the 25th. This is my biggest fear in the whole process. I am not worried about the restrictions after at all because I will have my sleeve helping me. But right now I am worried I will screw up the pre-op cause lets be honest I didn't get here cause of my love of shakes and Protein. I am really trying. I just am scared of failure. Any tips!?

I know exactly how you feel. I start preop diet Friday. I'm nervous. I'm always hungry and a Protein shake and some salad is like one meal for not a whole day. Good luck to you and ill pray for strength and will power for both of us

You can do it! The first few days are the worst...after day 3 you'll be fine.

My surgery is tomorrow and I've been on clear liquid since yesterday and pre op diet since Feb 1. My experience has been really rough. I've been hungry a lot and irritable. Much easier when I'm at work but have been snowed in since Friday with the blizzard (live in CT). I've lost 18 lbs which is great but it's been hard for me. Here are some tips:

Remember that this is the last time you will have to exert this much control over eating. You'll have to after the surgery but it'll be easier because you'll have a smaller tummy.

Drink a lot of water!

HOT broth -the hotter the better in my opinion

Lots of sugar free Popsicles and gum helped me through this time too.

A friend told me to get my clothes/closets ready for after surgery weight loss. Organize what you already have into "fits, sort of fits, and way too small"

You can do it! We're all here for you! Coming here has also helped me a lot. :-) Good luck!!

I started mine this past Saturday. My diet consists of 4-5 Carnation Breakfast Essentials, sugar free of course. Then, fill in with Water and crystal lite. I would love to have broth, but it's not on my list. I get sick of the sweet stuff all the time. I have to do this until my tentative surgery date of the 21st. They kind of slid me into a spot for surgery. I wasn't prepared for such a quick date. I didn't even get my good "last supper" Maybe it's better that way. Lol.....The first day I was really hungry, but it was better yesterday. I hope each day gets better. Good luck to you. I just had to think that Friday night was the heaviest I was ever going to weigh again. Yea!! Pretty good incentive to stick with it. Good luck!! :)

I am going to be starting my pre-op diet soon and I am super nervous, but what I keep thinking about is what the end result is going to be. I know it is going to be hard to adjust at first, but I am trying to get my mind set in the right place before hand to make it easier.

I really appreciate everyone's comments here. Seeing what others go through is really going to help me a lot.

I will echo what others are saying. Once you get past day 4 it gets easier. I lived on sf popsicles. I finally found a Protein Shake I could live with. I got the GNC nutician shakes at my grocery store. The chocolate ones are the best (in my opinion). I kept telling myself that I didn't want to get to the day of surgery and have my doctor say he couldn't do it because I wasn't complying with the rules. That would have been embarrassing! I lost 9 pounds pre surgery and I am now 39 pounds down. This surgery will save your life. The important thing to remember is that it's all up to you. "nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels" Good luck to you. These forums really help.

I was really worried about my PRE op as well. My husband told me "if you can do this , why not just lose another 70 and you'll be done" he lost on Protein diet years ago. He lost 80 lbs on weight watchers and has kept it off completely for 3 years so far.

It is hard ... Very hard and I had to give up a 6 to 8 a day diet come habit as well. I Sri k lots of Water 6 to 8 bottles a day. I can have 2 Protein shakes and 2 sugar free Popsicles. Then 1 hardy Soup at supper. Just keep in mind it is only a short 2 weeks and it is to help make your surgery a success. I have been drinking Decaf Iced tea this week and it helps with cravings.

Take it one day at a time. keep a bottle of Water at the ready and get rid of things you should not have at your place. Keep reminding yourself that this is a necessary part of preparing for your surgery. You want to go in at the very best you can be and don't want to do anything to jeopardize your surgery or recovery.

You can do it!! Good luck!!

Its easier said than done...I'm pre-op patiently awaiting a surgery date, but I have been experimenting with pre-op diets along with a 1200 cal diet plan my doctor gave me and I've lost a total of 23lbs since Jan 3rd. I've just come off of a "crash diet" I started 5 days ago and I lost 10lbs. Don't be afraid, believe in yourself and find something to keep your mind occupied. Good luck you can do this, you're almost there.

Thank you everyone. I guess the mental part of this is the hardest. Am I really hungry?! Or bored or just in the habit of eating at a specific time of day. I am 1/2 way through day 1 so hopefully tonight and I will go to bed early to help with

Late night munching :) thank you for all your support.

Day 2 is going much better than day 1 I think yesterday I tried to do to much and be to perfect this ending the day emotionally over whelmed but today I woke up and did things a bit differently.

I had 2 scopes of Protein this morning instead of 1 now and 1 later. I am having salad for lunch vs a second shake. And I making London broil for dinner so I have 2 real meals and Aprox 78 grams of Protein. I think this was a much better approach for me :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
