I'm not going to tell anyone but my Mom, Dad, and Husband. I don't want to be the poster child for WL surgery in the family. I want to get my weight off and go on about my life. I know my cousin that had lap band. Everyone is always talking about her. What is she eating? She should have lost more. Things like that. I've stuck out for so long with my weight that I just want to be normal. So did you tell?

I am just starting the process but plan to tell no one but my husband.

Serously, I don't have any problems with anyone knowing I have had surgery, if I can help someone else I'm all for it. I don't worry about what others say or think about me.

I only told 3 people. My best friend - because it was going to effect our eating out at buffets on the weekends. And my parents - because I eat lunch with them on Sundays and mom is going to wonder why I suddenly started eating less than my dad. Other than that, I don't feel the need to tell anyone.

Hi! I see you are a Maliapur patient too! He's an amazing surgeon, and Huntsville hospital staff is fantastic! I'm 23 and unmarried. So of course my parents and my brother know, along with my grandparents. Other than that I only told my best friend. My mom and her cousin had gastric bypass a few years ago, and the entire (gigantic) family was in an uproar over their decision and how fast/much they were/weren't losing. I don't want to be scrutinized like they were so I decided to keep it to myself. It's going great so far. Good luck with your surgery!

Family knows, a few friends know, but that's about it for now. I won't try to hide it if it comes up, I don't care what others think, plus as mentioned earlier, if I can help shed some light on the subject for someone who wants to have the procedure done, or someone who thinks negatively about it, I'm all for that.

The only person who knows right now is my husband. I plan to keep it that way. This is my journey and I need to take the way I think is right for me. May have to tell our son as he is moving back in with us for a year so he can finish up his degree.

I am not telling anyone simply for the fact is is none of their business. Yes, people will ask why I am eating so little and all sorts of things. I just say I'm dieting. I've tried everything so people who know me know I'm just dieting again.

My brother had bypass a few years ago. He needed it, it worked for him because he did the work for it. The family is proud of him but everytime he is going to be around, everyone starts getting concerned if we should put this out or that out so it doesn't tempt him. I tell them he has to be responsible for what he eats and is capable of making it. I just don't want that. I have alway been a private person and just don't feel the need to answer questions that are personal. Just because someone asks, doesn't mean I have to answer. I just say I'm dieting this way for the moment and change the subject. If they question further, I say the same thing and change the subject. Same as when I would diet, would get the how much weight have you lost? I guess it's a normal curious question but I just don't feel comfortable talking about it. If it's been a 20 or more pounds I'll just says something like, thank you, I've lost a good clip and change the subject. I've people say good, but how much, next answer is not as much as I would like to have by now. Change the subject. That is the end of my good graces. After that, if asked again, I say It's personal for me and don't wish to discuss it. Never had anyone go further than that.

Just remember, it's your journey and you don't owe anyone any explainations or have to defend your your choice. I am finally finding my backbone behind all the chubbiness.

I told my family and best friends. I had the lap band done 18 mos ago and would get the occasional question...wow that procedure really slow, huh? But I really didn't care. I have a huge hispanic family and well....all our parties and get togethers are all about FOOD. That's ok. I know I will be able to enjoy some of the healthier things that are put out. I just have to learn to be responsible and know when to stop. So far there has been nothing but a positive reaction from everyone.

i mainly kept that I've had surgery to myself. Not because I don't want to tell people but because I don't need food Nazis.

I talked it over with my Husband and my Mother first because my mom and I own a business together so she would have to pick up the slack while I was down. Once they were on board I told my 3 kids (all adults). My Aunt came for a visit and I had my Nut visit and I told her I was going....she has yet to let up on my making a big mistake by doing the surgery....I can now see the need to be more careful who I tell. From now on I will be very very selective!!!

I, for some reason, feel like people are ashamed to tell more people about having WLS. It is not something to be ashamed of. Clearly people every day see us all overweight, struggling in our daily lives in one capacity or another. I, for one, am shouting it from the roof tops that I am making the biggest change of my life and getting on the road to a healthier me. I feel like people are either being phony or they are just too ashamed or afraid to open up and be honest about what is going on. Yes, some people are going to say negative things about you getting WLS, but SO WHAT. I have faced the same thing and just had to show them that I do not care what they think; I am going to do what is best for me and for my health. This surgery is going to be a life changer and it is going to bring back my vision.

I went to a support group a few weeks ago and people there were telling stories of how they would tell their friends and family that they had been working out more and changed their diets up when asked how they had lost so much weight. Why lie? Where is that going to get you? I would rather be honest and show them that I made a choice that I can stick with for life. Honesty has always been the best policy and I see no need to change that just to meet another human being's expectations of me.

My cousin, who was my babysitter growing up, just had WLS a little while ago. Our family treats her no differently than they do anyone else. At family gatherings they do not molly coddle her about what she eats or worry over whether or not they need to put certain foods away. Why would they? If you are willing to put your body through this surgery, you should be willing to have the will power to abstain from eating the foods or portions you know your body can't have. She is my surgery role model. I am so ecstatic that she is such and that we have such a supportive family behind us.

I'm sorry if this is offensive to anyone. I am tired of being "that girl" who let weight define her and keep her quiet for so long. All my life I have kept my opinions to myself because I wanted people to like me or be my friend, but now, I don't care anymore. I am shouting it out from the roof tops. Weight loss surgery is about to change my life forever!

I'm opting out from telling people my family is aware and A few very close friends a couple people at my work have gotten the sleeve and everyone always compare them all together its sad I don't want to be apart of it and also when we have a potluck or something people will make comment to some of the known sleevers an say why are you eating that or stop eating that I feel that is none of people business to keep yourself on the right healthy track some people don't need to know I have only told the people that I feel will be a positive support system for me I don't feel negativity will help me on my journey
