Gastric Sleeve Surgery over Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hello to all,

I am having WLS in about one month and right now I am jumping thru all the hoops to get paperwork, forms and tests completed before I see my surgeon on Feb. 26th. I just wanted to take a survey to see how many folks who have had the Sleeve surgery had/have at least 100 to 140 pounds to lose. I have taken the time over the past 3 years to research all types of WLS and based on my own research have decided that the Gastric Band had too many problems, and the gastric bypass was a little too scary for me. The sleeve seems the better route to go since you are disconnected and then reconnected . I am in my early 60's and need to lose around 140 pounds. I am just trying to see if anyone else out there has to lose this much weight and is doing it with the sleeve.

Thank you so much for your input regarding this and good luck to everyone.

I started at 379 and am 5'5" tall. I chose the sleeve over the other surgery for basically the same reasons you listed. I have already lost 65 pounds in just over 7 weeks so seems like it was a good choice for me. Good Luck.

Statistically (nationally), according to my doc, you lose about 80% of excess weight with RNY, and 70% with the sleeve. However, either group can lose all of their weight if they work at it. He also states that in his personal patient population, it seems like the weight loss is pretty equal in both groups.

My doc said I was a candidate for either, but that I would lose more with the RNY. I just didn't want malabsorption, so I went this route. I had about 160 to lose, and have lost nearly 50 in 7 weeks.

There are a ton of people here who have lost 140 lbs and much much more!!

I decided on the VST because I just never felt comfortable with the idea of bypass. Had the sleeve been around years ago I would have done it then. My surgeon also agreed that the sleeve was my best option -- I have MS and Lupus and I just did not want to take a chance with malabsorption issues. The sleeve just seemed so simple and straightforward. Even if I could possibly lose more with bypass I was just more comfortable with the sleeve. And I was ok if I did not lose ALL of my weight.... as long as I lost most of it!

I had the gastric sleeve surgery in Nov. 2012. To date I have lost 118lbs and would like to lose about another 10 lbs. I highly recommend the gastric sleeve over the RNY. I am a registered nurse and have seen too many patients who had the RNY and have life long issues with malabsorption, diarrhea and nausea.

I had a start weight of 383. I'm currently hovering around 100 pounds lost since surgery on 10/22. If I get to where my doctor wants me (150), I'll be dropping about 230 pounds total (my personal goal is somewhat higher - 180). I chose the sleeve in part because it was permanent (no worrying about adjustments and sweet spots) and because it was not malabsorptive (because who wants to never have chocolate again without getting sick).

I'll have assistance with Portion Control for the rest of my life and for the first time ever I feel like I can get to a reasonably healthy weight.

I have not had my surgery yet. I am 40 years old, hypothyroid, 5'5" and my highest weight was 360. My goal weight is 150 which is 210 pounds from my highest weight! My weight when I started considering the sleeve was 330. I NEVER wanted the bypass. If I wanted to do that I would have had weight loss surgery 15 years ago! The band just seemed too complicated. When I heard about the sleeve I just KNEW it was the right surgery for me. I don't know if I will loose all my weight with the sleeve or not... but I do know that I'll lose some of the weight and some is better than none!

Hi, I'm 61 , and had the sleeve surgery on Jan15. I need to loose about 100 pounds maybe more. I choose sleeve, because it seemed safer than a bypass. I am almost a month out and doing fine. I am sure you will be happy with your decision. I have lost about 20 pounds in 3 weeks:)

I started at 338 5'7 Pre-surgery.

DOS (5-18-12) 288

Current: 195

That's 143 pounds gone! I still have about 40 to go to get to my goal. Maybe 30 + skin reduction surgery.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
