Soooo...the school system that I work in has chosen not to include WLS in our policy through United Healthcare. Which in turn means...SELF PAY

Has anyone in here had a sleeve done in Louisiana or the USA and had to self pay?

If so how much how much round about did it cost?

I am not interested in going out of the country to have this surgery...as my mother is in the medical profession and would hear nothing of the sort...not that I wanted to either.

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated!

I know that you aren't interested in going out of the country and neither was I until I started doing my research about going to MX. I would say don't limit yourself because you would be surprised at how skilled those surgeons are, especially since they perform the more frequently.

I agree, I'm from Canada and it would have cost me around $20,000 to have it done at home. In Mexico it cost me $5500 because of my high BMI, or it would have been $4500. Also the doctors have only done the surgery in the hundreds not in the thousands that the Mexico surgeons have done. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Here in Texas the surgeon I spoke to was $14k. I just didn't have that much and did a Ton of research and ended up going to a very reputable surgeon in Mexico. I am in the medical field and so I understand your concern about Mexico. But I can tell you first hand I received first class treatment and wonderful medical care!! Best wishes on your journey :)

I am not sure how to respond to everyone's individual post...so here goes!

My biggest concerns about getting treatment in Mexico are:

  1. Being kidnapped by drug lords or the mexican cartel (I know it sounds CRAZY but it's a real fear of mine)
  2. Follow up after the procedure where would I get support and treatment should something go wrong?
  3. Steriotype of what I have seen in Mexico on vacations

Thanks Tiffany M. I will look into this website I live in Lafayette...used to teach in Iberia Parish actually and they didn't cover it either :(

Look forward to more information!!!

Just do a little research on these boards and the Internet, you will see that those areas are safe. No difference to the crime and such in the US.

Pelekania,

I will do some research; but the website that Tiffany left lists the quote as just under 10 grand...which to me is much less than some of the self pay quotes I have heard recently. I joined this site for information, insight, and suggestions :) thanks so much!!!

No problem! Just make sure whatever surgeon you choose that you check there background and see if you can speak with patients. Nothing like hearing from the Docs patients. Good luck to you!

Our health insurance has an exclusion on WLS as well so I am self pay. I live the Dallas area. My Dr. charges $12,200. Includes everything. Also includes dietitian, labs and follow ups for as long as you want. For me personally, Mexico was not something I wanted to do and my husband soundly rejected it. One reason is the follow up. Once I come home, I won't see that Dr. again. I like the fact that my Dr. is local and I have access to him should I need it. That is just our personal choice but everyone is different.

Looking at other Dr.'s in the area, his price is with 1k different higher or lower than most of the Dr.'s here. You will know what is right for you come decision time and that is the most important opinion of all. :-)

Happy to help! All follow up visits are free of charge. He also provides a pager number and can be reached 24/7. He calls back right away. I have had a very easy recovery, felt great after only 3 days! I also have a friend who used him. She is 5 months out and has lost 70 lbs. I give him 5 stars :)

I'm going to mexico... but self pay here in my area is over 20,000 so $4,500 in mexico just makes sense... If I lived in lousianna or Texas where I could get treatment for $8900 I'd probably do that to avoid having to travel.. It WOULD be nice to have my surgeon close for followup support.. but since I have to travel anyway, I may as well get it done in mexico for much less.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
