food question...just curious. looking for sleevers who been out of post-op 1 year +++ Men too thanks

So today makes 4 days post-op. I'm not really too hungry. some stomach pain, gas, etc. but I seem to be doing ok. just want the pain sites to heal and stop hurting. i got 6 in total.

the other night we cooked. i fed my daughter some chicken finger style and some fries. wifey had a steak and cheese. she felt bad. but i honestly didn't care too much thank God. I'm just curious...any sleevers out there that have been sleeved for more than a year....?

back in the day i could go out to eat, have a few apps, then have a huge filet mignon plus potatoes plus 3 shrimp plus bread dessert salad and drinks. sometimes even wifeys leftovers.

if we went to a burger joint, i'd eat a 1/2 lb. burger, fries, a coke and or shake plus onion rings for the table and whatever wifey didnt eat.

pizza, i could easily eat a whole pizza large. Mcdonald's wow forget it. 2 large fries 2 double cheeseburgers gallon of coke and 10 pc chicken nuggets. with a ton of sauce and ketchup to boot.

so i'm just curious, once the healing is all said and done, what will i be able to eat ??

if i order a whole burger will i be able to finish it or 1/4 or 1/2 ??

just interested in this.

i don't plan on gaining weight back if i lose a lot like i said im just curious.

like people say you can eat what you want just smaller portions. my doctor said he had some patients who can still eat like before. true? even possible ??

like if i get a sub can i have a 6 or 12 inch sub plus some chips? just want to fit in and be normal. huge italian family who loves sports i.e. superbowl does NOT help.

Take this journey one day at a time and think in the present. Don't worry about what you can and can't eat in the future. Some can't have bread, rice or Pasta while others can. Do you think you should be able to eat even a 6" sub at any time in the future? I sure hope not. You will probably be able to hold 6-8 ounces at one time, certainly not a 6" sub. So go slow measure all your food and eat slowly. Good Luck

I'm almost 16 months out and, at 4 days out, I was a little sad at the thought of not being able to eat the way I used to....probably because I was four days without food!!! It all passes, you heal, you get through the food stages and eventually settle into whatever your new "normal" will be.

Like Amazon13 says, you will eventually be able to eat around 6-8 oz depending on the food and your sleeve's tolerance to specific foods--everyone's different!!

I don't go out to eat anymore unless it's to join someone for a specific reason....and I'm truly okay with it!! I actually enjoy my rather routine way of eating.

If anything, take advantage of where you are right now and the tremendous weight loss you'll have over the next year or so....because at some point, you WILL be able to eat more and your weight loss will slow down.

No you said 6 inch sub and that's what they referred to in their response.

Take one day at a time. You will get use to the small amount of food intake eventually and when you can eat about three bites of a fully prepared sub and you are stuffed you will think oh no I'm eating too much lol trust me

You will love the weight loss more than those horribly over indulgent meals.

You will eat for fuel not for pleasure

Your new life will give you the pleasure!

Guess where you are going to "fit-in" soon? Airline seats, theater seats, amusement park rides, kayaks, regular clothes...the list goes on and on!

Which is better? That, or being able to down a crapload of food?

Here is a video of a VSG patient eating what looks like a 6" subs. Check out his other videos. He has another video of how he feels 5 mins after finishing this sub... Its doable for some people but you are not going to feel very comfortable after eating a 6" sub.

Anyways everyone is different... You should want to change from having this surgery but some just want the weight loss . I believe in the beginning we all hope to be able to feel "normal" again but that's the key word *again* we probably never ate "normal" before if you were obese like I was ... After months of living with our sleeves I think those feelings diminish and we become comfortable with what we can or cannot do...

The beginning is hard mentally but it gets easier

Almost 20 months out, here.

I can eat anything and everything, smaller quantities and takes me awhile sometimes. I CHOOSE my foods as well as I can, but sometimes ...

The other afternoon, I found myself without a lunch and starting to feel burned out. Knew I had to eat. There was a McDonalds a block away, so I went in and ordered 1 cheeseburger. I was able to eat it all except for the last bite. I went into the trash. I was completely full. Took me about 10 minutes to eat it.

About once a month, I will get a 6 inch tuna sub from Subway. I can eat about half of it in half an hour. I will then finish the rest about an hour or so later.

I used to mourn not eating the way I used to until I started watching other people eat. Shoveling down huge quantities of food. I began to be so grateful that I didn't have to do that anymore.

Love my sleeve.

food density will determine in large part how much you can eat.

I seem to be able to eat more than most folks, must have a fairly long stomach, and here's how I landed:

I can eat an entire tuna salad or pimento cheese sandwich, with the two slices of wheat or rye bread lightly toasted.

No way I could eat an entire cheeseburger on a soft white bun with fixins. I can eat an entire cheeseburger patty by itself, if it's of reasonable size and thickness.

I can eat one and a half slices of thin crust cheese pizza. I can barely finish one slice of thin crust loaded pizza. I cannot eat an entire slice of pan pizza regardless of what's on it.

I can eat about 10 - 12 large steamed shrimp. But I can eat only 2 - 3 oz of filet mignon, and not one bite of anything else at that meal.

Seems to be no limit on crunchy foods such as chips and popcorn. Fortunately, they are not my weakness.

I can eat an entire doughnut or pastry, and normal sized slices of cake and pie. Unfortunately, they ARE my weakness.

I am about 13 months out, and can eat what I consider to be "normal" portions. Today for lunch I didn't go very healthy and had a McDouble, most of a large Fry, and a spicy chicken sandwich. It prob took me 30 mins to eat all of that. And granted, that was a much bigger meal than I normally eat, but it gives an idea of what is possible for me. Also, everyone is different, and as I recall, I was able to each much more than most early on as well.

I am 5'8" and went from a highest weight of 288 to a weight of 182 this morning. I am still losing, though VERY slowly.

Hey thats me! - Im famous - lol. I definately don't eat like that everyday - in fact I don't eat bread - Pasta - Rice - or white potatoes. Every now and then I will indulge in a sub but its far and in between. You will find with time you can easily eat around the sleeve if you want to. Of course you will get fat again and undo all hard work you have done to lose the weight. You can eat quite a bit if you space it out over an hour or so or drinking with your meal you can obviously eat more because you flush the food out of your stomach. I still make it a rule to never drink while I eat. Just be careful - remember you DO NOT want to fall into these bad habits. I weight myself a few times a week, exercise, and do not allow my weight to fluctuate more than 5 pounds. I will never allow myself to be a miserable obese man again. Having a small stomach and less hunger hormones ROCKS because I like to feel full. Don't worry about the future - just follow your plan - Protein first - keep the carbs under control and enjoy the journey. There is more to life than stuffing our face with food anyway.

Oh, this is perfect. I took pictures today of my lunch before and after. The boy at Nature's Table in the mall here made me such a pretty lunch, despite the changes I asked for (no bread, no crackers, no croutons) that I had to take a pic. He added the avocado at my request to their chicken salad. Yum The pictures show in graphic detail what I can eat at about 18 months out. Notice the untouched tea.

Oh, yeah! I'm up and raring to go! I cannot believe how great I feel now. I had long-term back pain that the gallbladder removal has eliminated. I didn't even realize how much I hurt until my GB went bye-bye. :) Thanks for asking! :)

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
