post op diet differences

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, as I am goirng through my 2nd week of post op, I cannot help but feel the post-op diet is different for everyone. I have heard one nutritionist will not allow their patients to progress at all, where others will determine how you are tolerating food. What I want to know is what was your post-op diet, were there anythings you were told to avoid any given week, and if your nutritionist would progress you if you were doing well.

Here is my post op diet:

day 1-3 Clear Liquids (self explanatory)

day 4 to 13 Full liquids

Water; Protein Supplement; Carnation sugar free instant breakfast; Skim or 1% milk, gatorade, crystal light, sugar free cocoa, non-fat greek yogurt, cottage cheese, pudding, riocatta cheese, Decaf tea or coffee (and clear liquid items)

Day 14 to 30 pureed Diet

scrambled eggs, canned chicken mashed with a fork, fat free refried beens, lentils or split peas, skim or 1% milk, non-fat greek yogurt, apple sauce, blended peaches or pears, mashed banana, mashed potatoes (sweet potatoes), mashed carrots cauliflower or winter squash

(but then it goes on to say I can have hamburger

Day 31 to 45 Soft Diet

boneless skinless chicken or turkey; fish, shellfish, clams, eggs, pork or beef tenerloin, sirloin, flank steak dark meat chicken or turkey, lean ham, canadian bacon, veal, salmon...

there is more in terms of veggies, but figured I wouldn't list everything. Let me know if this was your meal plan, or if yours was different, I have noticed a lot in the way of differences with the pre-op diet, just trying to figure out if the post-op is the same way.

Your diet looks almost identical to mine except I can't have eggs till day 31. I did progress myself kinda right past the whole puréed thing though. I'm eating soft boiled eggs and turkey sausage for Breakfast, Soup for lunch (split pea today) and well chewed meat with a mushy cooked veggie for dinner. Doing fine with it. Not sure how my doc is gonna like it when I see him on Thursday but I'm loving it.

Mine was:

Day 1-2: Clear Liquids (broth, Decaf coffee, sugar free Jello and popsicles, tea)

Day 3 to 2 week post-op appt: Full liquids (strained cream Soup, greek yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, soy milk, apple sauce)

2 week post op to 6 week post op appt: Soft foods (cooked veggies and fruits, soft chicken and fish (no beef or pork), lunch meat, saltine crackers)

6 weeks post op: beef and pork, raw veggies and fruits, well-toasted bread

Starches were discouraged. I really didn't eat them till much later.

Hi there! Your post op diet looks exactly like the one the bariatric nutritionist gave me to follow. I am 5 days post of and had a little bit of runny blended cottage cheese today and thought I was in heaven......lol I am taking it easy and trying just one food at a time so if it makes me feel bad or nasua I will know to wait to try it again later.

thank you all for the answers, I guess the post op diet, all the nutritionists pretty much agree with. I am almost 2 weeks out and cant wait until Sunday, I get to have canned chicken and blenderized meats...I cant wait. I really cant wait until soft foods, but one day and step at a time. I have not had any issues so far and everything is agreeing with me!! yay

I an 10 days post surgery and still doing liquids. I have no problem with liquids, pudding, Jello, and Soup, however, I find the Protein Drinks awful. Have anyone else had this problem.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
