Ok... I'm scheduled to be sleeved in march. During my pre op testing... I found out I have a small sliding hiatal hernia. I'm not going to lie... I've started having stomach pains and issues about 1-2 months ago every time I ate... But over the past week it's 100 worse. I just got my upper gi done last Monday. I see my surgeon on tue.

Anyone have this that could not be sleeved? Out come... Any advise you could share about what to do, helps, hurts, ect...

I found out I had it too just before surgery during my endoscopy. My doc said it is quite common for obese patients to have this! Really it was no big deal - they did the VSG and repaired the hiatal hernia at the same time (with stitches)... I don't see why they wouldn't do the VSG - they are going into the same place and can repair at the same time. Good luck!

I don't think there would be any problem doing the VSG. Personally I didn't know I had a hiatal hernia till after I woke up post op and the Surgeon told me he found one while doing my VSG and fixed it. Good Luck.

I to did not know I had one when I went in for my surgical consult with my surgeon last Feb I was telling him how nauseated I always felt in the am and the pains I would get and I already had my gallbladder out so I knew it wasnt gall stone attacks it felt similar tho, so he rushed me over for an upper gi right after my appt and we found out I had a slight Hiatal Hernia that I didnt know I had, and he said he could fix it when he went in and did my VSG and it wouldnt be a problem!! and He was right! He was able to fix it and my surgery couldnt have gone better I am 2 months post op had surgery Nov 14 2012 and it was the best decision I could have ever made!

I too had the Hiatal hernia.. but was not found out until he was doing the surgery.. Not a problem..he fixed it and did the surger too, then told me about it when I woke up.. but I signed a paper before surgery that said "if I find a hernia its ok to repair it" of course I signed the paper..and the only thing was after the surgery I had a hard time taking a deep breath..but they say that is normal for that hernia repair.. it went away after about a week or so.. no pain or anything from that.. I dont have a gallbladder and had no pain before hand with the hernia.. so I had no tests other than an EKG before surgery.. but thats ok.. everything went so well.. and Im one month post op today..and things are great Im down about 33 lbs so Im very happy to lose that in a month.. hoping the next month goes as well as im going to add some exercise to the program now.. Im back full time at both my jobs.. 80 hrs a week with lift restrictions.. so far so good.. just take your Vitamins and Protein protein protein... thats the key.. rest up while you are off.. you will be tired.. but thats all normal..and walk walk walk.. good luck. hope this helps.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
