Surgery Scheduled 12/17/12

Recommended Posts

My head is spinning...I cannot get over that yesterday I walked out of the surgeon's office with a date. 8 years ago, I jumped through all the hoops that my insurance required for an appeal. I spent a lot of time gathering all the information, going to doctors and having extra tests done. Eventually my insurance company said no to the RNY. I lost 150 lbs on my own, and have struggled since then. My consult yesterday, the office manager tells me that my insurance required that I join a gym, do a sleep study, see a psychiatrist monthly and a nutritionist...and I said no. I had done all of that before, only to be dissappointed in the end. My husband and I decided prior to the appointment that we would cover the surgery if the insurance was going to be a pain the butt...now I am spinning.

I guess when you want something bad enough you do what you have to do. I am in the same boat. I hate spending $15,000. But money well spent for a healthier new ME!!! Good luck to you. I am scheduled for December 3rd.

Congratulations! I also had a similar experience 8 years ago, and now I got approved right away. It's a change in the attitudes in the medical and insurance communities that this isn't just a "quick fix". For us, it's as necessary to save our lives or stop all of the disease associated with obesity as any other surgery.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
