What Did You Pick The Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, as I get closer to my date my fears start to come into my head and I worry that it wont work for me, what made you pick the Sleeve over the Band and the Bypass?

i'm pre-op. i'm picking the vsg because it's less invasive than the gastric bypass, not a fan of rerouting intestines...seems unnecessary if you can get a similar effect w/ vsg, leave more of your stomach and still be able to take pills like a normal person. vsg does not have the same problem the bypass does with malabsorption of nutrients.

lapbands, despite being sold as a permanent weightloss solution are not actually permanent. just a search w/ 'revision' on this forum can show you the numbers of problems people have had. also i dont like having to come back over and over and over for fills and unfills. i also fear getting things stuck.

for me its vsg or nothing.

My wife got the bypass, I had prostate cancer and didn't want the malabsorption, I need solid nutrition. The band is too high maintenance and seemingly has less success. My doc leaned toward the bypass for me, I leaned back toward the sleeve which he gave me. He underestimated my determination to lose. 2 more pounds and I send him a picture,

I picked the sleeve over the bypass because statistically it had fewer complications for about the same amount of weight loss. The sleeve also allows a person more freedom in food choices and does not have the malnutrition artifacts like the bypass. I have been super happy with the sleeve so far.

I didn't want the malabsorption and I wanted a surgery where I could keep my pyloric valve. Lap Band wasn't even a option for me because I refuse to have a foreign object in me because I was scared of my body rejecting it. Plus I didn't want to deal with dumping and having to chew food to a puree for the rest of my life with gastric bypass.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
