pain in left side

Recommended Posts

Im only 2 days banded however Im starting to freak myself out. When I was trying to catch my connection plane today I started feeling a pain in my left side. I thought it perhaps was gas pains but it stayed pretty constant until I got home and turned into a shooting pain. Then it simply would come and go. Ive resorted to my bed because when I lay down I dont feel it. When I get up I can feel it again. Does this sound familiar to any bandsters out there? I plan to call my doc in the morning anyway but if anyone knows what this is please help so I can sleep tonight:notagree

Roxy,

I had the same problem when I first got my band ... it was muscle pain, due to the port being attached ... it's on the left side, right near the rib cage.

Hi Roxy,

And congratulations on your banding! Sorry to hear about the pain and I can think of a few things that might be going on. (I am not a doctor and I do not play one on TV)

Two days out I was still taking pain meds to get me through parts of the day. Two days out you're getting on a plane with a connection, no less. My guess is that you got really over-fatigued, sitting in a tight seat for hours and that sounds like a prescription for killer gas. High up on the left side is a usual haunt of killer gas. Did your doc suggest getting a medication for gas like Gas-X? It doesn't work for everyone, but it did for me. Take your pain meds, You are not forgetting your Water are you? Find a heating pad, lay down and go to sleep. I suspect you will feel somewhat better in the morning.

Please check back in and tell us how the night went and if you called your surgeon. We'll be interested to know.

Take care,

Jo Ann

Thanks for your help. I slept like a baby (thanks to the pain meds) and when I woke I only felt a little pang. I think Im gonna be alright. Im just going to take it easy today. By the way I did take gas x, thats what I thought too but it was a little suspicious when it hurt in the same exact spot for so long. Im new at this thing and thanks to you both. Im feeling much more at ease.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
