Expectations Realistic? What If I Lift Weights?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved July 30. I lost 12 pounds on the pre-op diet and have lost 41 since then for a grand total of 53 pounds. I was 300 when I started, so I am 247 now (I am 5'5"). I have no idea if that is good, or if I am losing too slowly. I have just started working out like I should. <<<<insert random excuse here>>> I hope to speed this up a little bit. My surgeon's office is great before the surgery, but very unhelpful at this stage of the game. All I get is "do the best you can" and "everyone loses differently." I know that is true, but this seems a little on the slow side considering.....

Did any of you get an idea from your surgeon on how much you would lose on a weekly basis?

Also, I know that muscle burns more than fat, and I am pretty sure that is part of my problem. Has anyone tried weight training to build muscle--how did that impact your weight loss?

First congrats on your 50 pound loss! I am only 10 days out, but was told that on average people are saying it's about 10 pounds a month for the first 5 months.

After that I was told to re-eval your eating habits and make sure to get Protein first to stay fuller longer and make sure liquid calories are not being taken in.

Good luck on your journey!

The only thing specifically that my surgeon said about expectations was when I asked him if it was realistic for me to lose 100 pounds in one year and he replied, "Yes!" If I do everything I can, including exercise, then I believe him. If I decide I don't want to make the necessary life style changes, then perhaps I won't lose 100 lbs. I would love to weigh 140 next October-I started at 278, last Friday's weigh/in - 240. believe!

Honestly: Every time I ask them this question pre and post op they would never answer it directly.

Instead, they would say that moat can be expected 50-60 % of their excess weight which is totally depressing for most. I am surprised they would push this angle because most want to lose 100%. It must be to protect themselves from lawsuits.

I am currently on the higher end having lost 77% in about 4 months (115 lb), but come on: can they not just be optimistic for everyone?

A recent article in Men's Health said if you want to lose weight and keep it off, weight training is mandatory, not optional.

It works out like this (according to the article). If you lose weight just with reduced calories alone, 33% of the weight loss will be lean muscle. If you lose weight with reduced calories and cardio, 23% will be lean muscle. But if you lose weight with reduced calories and resistance training, 3% will be lean muscle. Obviously these are averages and depend on other factors like how much you workout and how much you reduce your calories....but you get the idea.

I started lifting a little over two months ago, and my weight loss has definitely slowed way down since then. I am eating a few more calories and a lot more Protein.

But, I lifted when I was younger for football, so my guess is that I am still losing fat while putting on more of the muscle I used to have. My pants size is still shrinking, for example, and I can already see a big different in the size and definition of my muscles.

I would recommend not focusing on total weight loss or rate of weight loss as much as calorie intake, Protein intake, physical fitness, how your clothes fit, and how you look naked.

To me, the weight is just a number. I would rather be in shape and have some more muscle than weigh less. If you weigh less but have no tone, size or strength, to me, what's the point? But that's just my view.

My next step is to go and get a body mass measurement (Bod Pod or DEXA), and then follow it up in 6 months to 1 year to see how my approach is working.

Good luck.

Hate to state the obvious, but are you tracking your intake? I didn't see you mention this at all. Have your tried something like myfitnesspal to track what you are eating/drinking vs. exercise. This should help eliminate or reduce your .... insert excuses. Stick with your VSG diet plan, take your supplements, drink enough Water (do not drink your calories) and at least 60+ grams of Protein.

Exercise is important for that flabby skin look and will help you feel better about yourself. Reflect and remember why you went to all the trouble of VSG each and every day. Maybe write down why you did this and post it on your refrigeration, bathroom mirror and car dashboard. Then do your best that one day to rock your sleeve.

Hugs - know you can turn this around.

If you don't mind, I would rather not focus on how you look naked. I don't need those nightmares.

I really don't have that much of a diet plan--like I said, my surgeon's plan is "do the best you can" with no specific goals. I try to get Protein in first and drink a lot. I am behind on progressing the diet due to some early complications. I would prefer a specific X grams of protein, X calories, and X carbs or less, but for whatever reason my surgeon's office is vague and evasive when I ask. From the tone of your post it sounds like I am not losing at the rate that one would expect.

Can you share what your daily goals are regarding Fluid, protein, carbs, calories and exercise? Thank you for your advice!

That is outstanding! Can you share your daily goals in regards to fluids, grams of Protein, grams of carbs, total calories and exercise? I would really appreciate it.

The following works for me:

Fluids: 125+ oz

Protein: 125+ gr

Carb: 20-30 gr

Calories: no more than 900

Exercise: 1-1.5 hour walk with dog. I make it aerobic by going fast and going up hills.

Good luck and hope you find something that works well for you.

Also forgot to mention I take a superfood and veggie powder mix from GNC. It is great as it has 70 different antioxidant powders with a score of 2500. It tastes like berry which I think is impressive with all the different veggie, grasses and fruit powders mixed in.

It really is a holistic approach to giving the body all the detoxing super powers that are needed. And boy do we have a lot of toxic matter stored inside of the fatty tissue and cells. Lose the toxity (sp?) and you will lose the fat because fat binds to it.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
