Weight Gain Since Starting Purée Meals...what Am I Doing Wrong?

I was sleeved on 10/9 and during the 1st 2 weeks lost 18 lbs. When I went on puréed foods I stalled for 5 days and now I've gained 2 lbs. I started to add unflavored Protein Powder to my food and wonder if this is the cause. This is so frustrating to go thru all this to not only not lose but to gain so soon. And please don't bother with the "you lost 18 you should be so proud" remarks. Something is amiss with my surgery. I've never read about anyone gaining so soon. I follow the diet and portion and only drink Water and 0 cal drinks.< /p>

Two things: are you tracking your food? And are you in the infamous week 3 after surgery?

Also, have you went to the bathroom lately? Are you getting your Water in? These two things can mess with your weight.

I gave been tracking using Lose It. And yes I am at the 3 week mark. What happens then?

I've had to take laxatives since the beginning of this week. I am drinking a mix of Water an crystal light to hit the 64 oz required. Plain water tastes almost sour to me now, which is shame because I used to drink it with no problems.

You've lost 18 pounds!! You should be proud!!

J/K!!! Don't slap me, I couldn't resist. There is no doubt that this weight loss 'journey' 'ride' 'new life' (whatever you choose to call it) can be frustrating. You prob did hit the 3 week stall. Many people do. A couple other factors are in play here:

How much total weight you need to lose; less weight = a slower process.

Body fluids fluctuate so if you are weighing yourself daily you need to keep that in perspective.

MANY of us feel in the beginning that something is wrong, or that we will be 'the one' that will go down in the history books as this surgery not working no matter what we do. If you are working your program, you WILL lose the weight. Some people lose it faster than others. People advise on here not to weight yourself daily as the number 1 most important tip. I don't agree. I think not comparing ourselves to others is number 1. You will lose it on your body's timeframe.

Keep working the program. Protein, liquids, exercise= total success.

Three week is notorious stall date. I think your body says "Whoa, nellie! I'm losing fast here and I'm gonna take a minute to readjust!" If you are tracking and know you are getting the right amount of calories and you are drinking the right amount of Water, you'll be rewarded soon with a drop of that two pounds and then some.

Also, if it's that time of month, lots of people bloat up a little and then drop it in the next couple of weeks.

It takes a calorie deficit of 3500 calories to lose a pound, and the same is true for gaining a pound. So unless you ate an extra 7,000 calories last week, it's Water weight.

I was fortunate to not gain at the third week, but I lost only a couple of ounces, compared to the pounds I lost in the previous and following weeks.

Exact same thing happened to me great weight loss, three week stall, gained two pounds.

Then stall broke have lost the weight plus and am back on the losing road.

Three weeks is a milestone where almost every single WLS candidate goes through a stall. I think other ones occur, but not sure that they are as predictable as the three week stall is.

Sweetie, you have lost 18 lbs. in nineteen days. Please tell me, how much should you have lost? What is an amount in those nineteen days since your surgery that you would be "happy" with?

More food for thought: You can't rush perfection. If you do, you'll have severe skin left over anyways from it, so avoid that if you can! Anyways, it took you years to put it on, how long do you think it's gonna take to get it off?

Slap me if you must, but... think about what I said pls.

Oh and btw, you will have an influx of emotions in this journey whenever you lose quickly. Your body is making hormones for you at your largest and doesn't quite 'catch up' with the amount you lose so quickly. It takes time to recalculate. So best thing I can tell you is this ... be patient as you can... work the program (i.e. dr's orders - Protein, Water, exercise, regular BM schedule, sleep as well as logging your food) .... and best of luck to you, always. xx

I guess I'm more OCD than most. I've had a gastric bypass and a reversal than a band and removal. I'm just nervous that this is another in my list of surgical failures.

Actually u have received good feedback from ithers. What they haven't said is that we all gain lbs and then lose it. It most likely Water weight . Besides ur body does need a break to adjust in inches. :)

Sweetie, you have to open your mind to the possibility of succeeding. I totally can understand, but you are 19 days post op. Isn't it a bit early to call this an epic failure? It's not a race. There is NO finish line.

You are going to experience so many ups and downs, trials and tribulations. That's what this board is for... reminding you when we've all have those OCD moments and us talking you off the ledge.

Hang in there! Give yourself time to succeed... but open your mind to believing this thought... I CAN DO THIS. Because the moment you open your mind to it's possiblity is the moment that success starts.

Yeah I totally sound like Tony Robbins or some crap, but I tell ya... it's true. YOU CAN DO THIS. Work the program and give it time. Holler if you get on the ledge, we will talk you away from it.

As noted in the article, when rebuilding your glycogen stores, the body has to hoard Water to keep it in solution, so you are just seeing some Water retention. Hydration effects is almost always the cause when you see rapid weight transitions, either up or down, and is why we tend to stair-step rather than lose smoothly.

One bit of bad news that goes with this is that once you start losing again, your loss will be slower - the initial loss that you have experienced is glycogen (basically carbs) which burns fairly rapidly at around 2000 calories per pound; once you start losing again you will be burning fat which burns more slowly, at around 3500 calories per pound - but burning fat is what we are here for, so rejoice and enjoy the ride!

Hi everyone. I am on my 3rd week hade surgery on 10/16,and I've gained weight in the last week, about 15lbs!! I lost 27lbs in two weeks. HELP!!!!! What am I doing wrong!?!?!!!

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
