Surgery Before Or After Holidays

Recommended Posts

I can have my surgery as early as early December. Do you think that would be ok or better to wait until after holidays? I thought it would be good before the holidays because my husband is off some during that time and the kids would be out of school. I don't really give a hoot about all the food (well except the Desserts lol) I just don't want to be in pain and can't enjoy Christmas and new year with my family. What do you think?

I posted this in the Post Op forum because I thought that would be the people who would know best, but if it needs to be moved ok.

I had my surgery on Dec 27. I was on liquids on Christmas. I never regretted it. I started out the new year on my journey! I actually stuck to my resolution. I would do it ASAP. What's one holiday season when you can be on the road to good health? I promise by next Christmas you will be able to eat again.

I was faced with this also, I am a teacher and i have two weeks off for christmas and new years. I really want it done soon as i can get it done. But after thinking about it we (my husband and I) would have to be on a liquid diet FOR christmas because we dont get out of school for break until the 22nd so the surgery would be after christmas. I know I can not be around all that good food and be on a liquid diet! So we are going for Mardi Gras break.

another reason i am waiting is because of plane tickets. We are going to Mexico and it is MUCH more during the holidays.

I would say go for it as soon as you can. I'm 9 weeks post op and very happy. Never experienced pain other than gas pain and that resolved itself quickly. So in my opinion, go for it! Best wishes to you.

I had my surgery last year on November 9th and i missed out on Thanksgiving, but honestly i did not care about the missed food at all. I would get it ASAP. Also insurance plans change year to year so your surgery is covered this year but might not be covered next year. I have seen this story a few times on this board before where people lose coverage after the new year.

There will be other holidays. That's one of the reason why we're all doing this. We want to be around to enjoy all those holidays for many years to come.

My surgery is Oct 30th. I hate missing going out with the kids for Halloween but just think of the cool costume I'll now be able to fit in next year.

Well, my mom had her surgery December 19th last year and I had mine on the 29th. I think we both agreed the 29th was the easier option because of the holidays... I sure didn't have a great New Year's Eve, but my 2012 has been FANTASTIC!

There will be many more Christmas's and many more holidays that you will be able to enjoy thinner!

I agree, do it as soon as possible in early December that way you will be feeling much better come the 25th and might be on pureed. Pureed turkey is delicious!!!!!

Thanks everyone for your input. I was really just super worried about not being able to enjoy the holidays because I'd be in pain or uncomfortable. I think I am going to shoot for the earliest date possible. Get it done and start my new life!!!

I also am scheduled for surgery Nov 28, 2 days after my 66 birthday and 1 week after Thanksgiving. So I called all my immediate family and scheduled a Thanks giving at my house on Nov 11, before my liquid diet starts on the 14. Most of the time they have to come over for awhile and then go to other family members houses, now I selfishly will have them for the whole day yah! yah! I am trying to make this into a positive thing to get me through the holidays. Maybe by Christmas I will be able to eat some blended turkey and gravy. Also will be well enough to leave for a warmer climate which is what my husband (who is totally against this surgery) wants to do.

Good luck to all of us doing this at a very hard time of the year.

I'm sorry your hubby is against it. It's got to be hard without his support. Good luck and God bless. I will be praying for your surgery and a speedy recovery!

It sounds like you have a good opportunity to have much less to worry about doing it pre-op. just make sure the kidders and hubby understand you will be out of comission! Don't over do it!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
