Mexico Surgery And Post-Op Pain/gass

Recommended Posts

Sleeve surgery on 10/11/12- released on Friday (a day early). The 50 minute car ride home from hospital was torture! By the time I got in my house I was hysterically crying-so much pain! I'm wondering how people travel home from another country no less right after this surgery! I also had hiatal hernia repaired -maybe that accounts for some extra pain/gass but seriously, if I had to go to an airport, train or whatever to get home, I wouldn't have made it! Also, complications post-op... who do you see? I can't imagine another Bariatric surgeon wanting to take over 'after' the fact when there could be surgery related complications! Very intrigued!

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience... I had my surgery in Mexico with Dr. Ortiz who practices in an International Center of Excellence and didn't have any gas/nausea at all and no pain... just a general soreness in my abdomen and I flew the whole way across the country. I didn't have any hernia repair so maybe that is where we differ. As far as care afterwards??? My PCP was very supportive and agreed to do all of my aftercare which is really none unless you count blood work at 6 month and 1 year intervals and maybe an endoscopy after one year. I was sleeved April 16th and I haven't had one single issue...

Granted, we are all different and I am truly sorry that your experience has caused you this pain but there are a lot of folks who view our posts. Everyone needs to know that not all sleeve surgeries result in what you are experiencing..

May I ask who your surgeon was??

I hope you feel better soon!!!!!

I'm sorry your ride home was so painful :( That doesn't sound fun at all. I went to Mexico and honestly, I didn't have any trouble with the flight home. I really wasn't in any pain at all. I had a little discomfort at the main incision site, but really no pain to speak of. I flew all the way across the country and didn't have any issues.

Hhhmmmmm. Maybe the day early shouldn't have been? From what I understand, most people leave the hospital and then stay at the hotel for a few days? Add that in addition to the day early with a hernia repair...but it sounds as though you live pretty close.

I hope you feel better soon! Maybe gasx strips?

My surgeon is Dr. Ahmad at JT Mather Hospital, at his Bariatric center (which has awards for excellence). maybe they don't pump as much air inside when you dont need hernia surgery, maybe Mecico has better pain meds after surgery. Don't know. Thank God you all can get back home safe and sound! I just thought about what if everyone felt like this -how can they physically do it! Thanks for your replies! Education beats ignorance any day!

I know what you mean!!! I had horrible CO2 pain afterwards. I can't describe how awful it was. Then my parents drove me 5 hours back home so they could take care of me. I live in Louisiana but I'm from Texas. It was torture!!!

I had a friend that had it done and she had zero pain. It was a rude awakening when I woke up in recovery. I remember flailing around the pain was so bad. No regrets, but I wish I would've known about that ahead of time!

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that. I had surgery in Mexico with Dr Aceves. I had no pain after surgery, although I did have nausea the first two nights. Not during the day, just when I went to lay down for the night. Weird. I had a hernia repaired (didn't know I had it). I was in the hospital for three nights after surgery and had an hour-long van ride to the airport. I used a stuffed animal between my stomach and the seatbelt so no problems. The flight home was uneventful and I drove myself home from the airport (maybe 15-20 minutes). Still no pain, just tired and ready to lie down on the couch when I got home.

I had my surgery in Mexico also. I traveled 6-7 hours driving 1 way. Had surgery on Monday & was discharged on Thursday morning. I did fine. Im sorry you had complications & maybe it is because you had hernia surgery also. Wish you the best luck!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
