I was banded on 7/28/03. My Dr. has done over 600 lap bands. I was doing very well for the first 4 days on the liquid. But on the 5th 6th and 7th day I have eaten soft solids chewed very well but to day is my 7 th day after banded and I don't feel the same restriction as I did on the first few days. I have been drinking lots of Water with and in between meals I believe I'm emptyin my pouch to soon I also chew my food to a puree and then sawallow. I am not due for and fill for another 3 to 5 weeks. Has anyone out who truthfully ate some solids during the lidquid phase and Once you got your fill you had restriction again? I don't beleieve I strechted my pouch but i am concerned since I am now able to get more food down. I feel on a little restriction now and I have had no fills. Will things change for me? I have had no promblems with my health or band.

I wouldn't worry to much if I were you. You really are not supposed to feel much restriction (unless you are really lucky) until your first fill! But do try to follow your doctors dietary instructions as closely as possible. I really didn't feel any restriction until my first fill six weeks post op and I moved on to mushy food a little earlier than my doctor wanted me to as well!

Good luck,

Tanna

I started mushy foods a week after banding on 7-22-03, and have added some meats since then. I think that the restriction at first (I could barely drink water!) is because our stomaches are a little swollen from surgery.

I do have to chew, and chew, and chew before swallowing or it hurts like heck :D

Thanks for asking that question! I'm just barely banded and have been eating whatever I want. I, too, chew to puree and my dr. said mushy food for 4 to 6 weeks. Tonight I even ate brown rice and chicken and I do't feel as restricted either but if I eat more than about 1/3 cup I hurt. Good question and good answers. Thanks!

Please, please, please follow your surgeon's instructions. They're given to you for a reason. Even though you don't think you have restriction, solid foods may still get stuck. Even if you chew them to a "puree", it might still be too chunky to get down. This can cause vomiting, something you really don't want to mess with right now. If you start vomiting before you're fully healed, the sutures that hold your band in place can rip loose, causing the band to slip. Slippage will require another surgery.

I do understand that you're hungry. I do understand that staying on mushy foods for a few weeks is tough. I've been there. But, you don't want to mess with your body's healing time!

Some of the things that satisfied me during the mushy (not liquid...my surgeon doesn't require a liquid phase, just pureed/mushy) stage were:

Wendy's chili

egg/tuna/chicken salad mushed up really well (no celery or onion)

pureed bean Soups...as I went from pureed to mushy, I stopped pureeing them. really satisfying.

chocolate pudding

carnation instant Breakfast blended with milk, ice cubes and a dab of Peanut Butter

mashed potatoes with a little cheddar cheese sprinkled on top

Wendy's baked potato, no skin

I ate the salads and Soups for Protein (and great Fiber in the bean soups and chili!) and the other stuff for "comfort". I have to say that there were a few times I was practically crying because I wanted a big honkin' cheeseburger..lol..but I didn't want to jeopardize my band. Stretching the pouch is the least of your worries right now...you don't want to cause that band to slip!

I really want to say thank you all for each and every response. I appreciate your responses. Today I ate oatmeal and I had the liquid Protein which equals 30 grams of Protein in a 2oz. packet made by Vita4Life.com for breakfast today, and I ate soft veagetables for lunch and for dinner I drunk another 30 gram protein package. I am a little hungry right now but since it is late I wait until the morning to eat agin.

How do you know weather or not if your band has sliped? I know mine has not, but how would one know ???

Thank you all for your responses and the one to come.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
