Can't Stop Swallowing Air!

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone!

Does anyone know any tricks that will help me stop swallowing air when I sip? I'm 11 days out, still on Clear liquids, not using a straw, taking it slow and trying to be mindful. I can drink fine, but I know that this gurgling discomfort is because of the air I'm swallowing. Thoughts?

As a temporary measure, try Gas X strips.

Thanks, but got em. Only helps temporarily. There's got to be a way I can reduce the issue from the get go.

My surgeons directions actually recommend the straw to reduce air intake. When I take a sip, I drink till it touches my lips, block with my tongue and exhale before I drink. It takes a while sometimes, but no air bubbles :-) Other people have recommended a baby's sippy cup. I bought one at the Dollar Tree but haven't had to use it.

I exhaled before I took a sip for a while in the beginning

So far, so good! Seems to be going a little better. Thanks!

I think I have this same problem. I'm not so worried about the gut rumblings, but I hiccup ALOT.

At my first pre-op visit, the NP said to not drink things at extremes of temperatures for a while. So everything I drink now is more or less room temp, and things got better.

Last night I had a freezie pop, and I was able to have several within a half hour or so without any trouble at all. And that's something you have to suck on. So I'm trying a straw just for shoots and giggles.

If that doesn't work, I'm seriously considering requesting a referral to an occupational therapist, to teach me how to swallow again.

Keep us up to date! Good Luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
