So I have always been a big guy, My BMI is currently 42. Exercise and diet never worked for me. Id loose a small amount of weight and gain it back, I come from a family where they are all heavy and have diseases associated with being obese. So I decided to have this surgery through Abington hospital in Pa. I am in the process of lab work, and seeing my specialist for atena select approval. I hope all this work will get me approved. My friends and family don't understand I feel like. Some are thinking that I'm looking for an easy way out, but I'm not!!! ive been doing my research and I know that this surgery is far from easy. Here is the thing I know I want this surgery and I will go through with it, but I just don't Want to die! I'm terrified when I go under I wont wake up. Has anyone else been this scared. Luckily I have my partner with me every step, but he has doubts of his own. Any advice for me? My mind is going a mile a minute. I am just excited to feel happy and healthy and actually love myself.

Well, I wish I coul honestly tell you that there is nothing to be concerned about. But the truth is that there is the potential in any surgery for complications.

The good news is that serious complications on a virgin stomach are very rare. Leaks rarely happen and when they do, they are repairable.

I can say, my experience has been super smooth, but for some people the first month or two are just miserable

The only deaths I have ever even heard of associated with this surgury were due to the patient severely abusing their sleeve.

I can say, when I decided on this, I simply faced the reality that I really didn't have a life before the surgery, so what did I really have to lose?

Nervousness & wondering if you are making the right decision are completely normal, and believe me, the last day or 2 before the surgery, you will be ready to pick up the phone and cancel at least a dozen times. But once it's done and you get past the initial adjustment and discomfort. It's all blue skies & rainbows

I know exactly how u feel I'm on the same boat but I'm willing to risk it.... I can't continue living this way I'm very unhappy and depressed and I honestly feel it's my only way to regain my life! An having faith in god that all will go well!! U can do it ! Who cares if ur family doesn't approve do it for yourself. I have my scheduled date on aug 15 and I'm very excited yet veryyyy overwhelmed, but at the end it will all b worth it

I had those same feelings and worries. but with all the testes youhave to do they monitor you so things wont go wrong. I didn't have any of the co-morbidities that go along with obesity so the chances of something going wrong were a lot lower. You do what you have to do.

You are having the same fears most of us do. I actually tried to cancel the surgery about 2 mins before they wheeled me into the OR. My wife's eyes told me to lay down and shut up, the next thing I remember I was being wheeled from recovery to post-op.

If you want to help build confidence before your surgery, follow every single preop diet and exercise routine to T!!! Walk into that hospital 10' tall and bullet proof, knowing that you did EVERYTHING exactly as you were supposed to.

I haven't started yet but I reading a lot into it I'm feeling the same way as hand people telling me I shouldn't do it if ur heart tells u to then do it.

ss. I personally I'm the biggest baby just ask my two sons lol. My biggest fear was dying on the table. I finally figured it out, If I die on the table at least I died trying to better my life and the life of my family. Or I could do nothing and die sooner or later anyway. I chose to go for it. I had all the support in the world from my friends, co workers and of course my family. Iam so thankful for that. If you are not getting the support that you need from people that are closest to you, I am so sorry. You will get all the support and positive feedback you need right here.

We all have that one moment when we make a decision that changed are lives. Mine came at a amusement park. Me and my youngest got on a ride and where about to get started but the safety belt was not long enough. I was so mortified, embarassed and ashamed that I had to see my son get off the ride because of me. It still took me a couple of months of soul searching before I decided to have the surgery. I am so glad I did. The day of the surgery I was more anxious than scared. They gave me some meds that I don't even remember the ride to the operating room. I am down from my highest weight of 489 lbs to 263. I feel so much better. I dropped 50 points on my blood pressure in the first month after the surgery. I am a better father, a better husband and a better coach. My wife and two sons can actually hug me and touch their hands.

The one thing you have to is come to terms with your eating problem. I had to. If your thinking about drinking soda or beer or doing other things that got you to where you are currently, You are not ready. I decided that my loved ones are more important than that big bowl of ice cream or going to a all you can eat chinese buffet.

These community helped me. The information and the support here is awesome. Give yourself a chance at a better life. Give your loved ones a chance of future memories. I am so glad I did. Sorry if I rambled.

I'm on the same boat. I'm schedule 9/11. I'm petrified. I think "what if" I'm the one who has the horror stories, and If so, I did this to myself. My other option is staying fat. Ughhhh. My anxiety is killing me. I just want to get it over and done with,

Hi- many of us have has the same exact feelings... I also had the same real fears, particularly the last week prior to the surgery and when they were wheeling me to the OR and I hugged my husband, daughter and my mom.

But, my cardiovascular risks were so high without the surgery (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea) that I decided in my mind that not taking a step like this was just burying my head in the sand. I decided to choose life and make a change that could actually really help decrease my overall risk. Then, I took a deep breath and took the plunge with as much positive energy as possible. I followed every instruction in detail. I'm about 2 1/2 weeks out and feeling much better now (first 8-10 days were very hard mentally, not physically). I couldn't be happier that I did this. I am off all my meds except for Vitamins. :0)
