Medically Supervised Diet. What If Bmi Drops Below 35?

Recommended Posts

I have Cigna and will be starting the medically supervised diet next week. My BMI is just above 36. Does the insurance company look at your BMI before or after the diet? If is drops below 35 with the diet will that affect my chances for approval?

Hmm. I'd like to know too. Some people say they go by your first ever weigh-in at your consult with the surgeon but idk

My surgeon told me that the weight that is used is the weight at my first consult with her! Check with your doctors though to be sure!!

I was told that they go by the initial consultation weight, however my coordinator did tell me when I was sending in my last month's paperwork for my diet to make sure NOT to send her any paperwork with a weight lower than that I had recorded for the last month, since I was right on the 40 line and without any co-morbidities. Luckily that wasn't an issue since I didn't have any more paperwork to send them!

Thanks. I was going to start my 3 month diet with my PCP next week but now I think I should wait. My consultation with the surgeon isn't until September 7th. I thought I should start with the diet so I can get it over with because I want to have the surgery before the year is over since I heave met my deductible for the year. But I don't want it to make my consultation weight lower. Ugh. so frustrating. I don't know what to do. Maybe I can start the diet but not lose any weight the first month? But then I'm afraid it won't look like I'm motivated to the insurance company. I don't know the right answer!! :(

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
