Day 2 Post Op Question (Maybe Tmi)

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am on my second night post-op and I am feeling completely bloated/nauseous/painful. I have not been able to pass much urine since they took the catheter out this morning and I was wondering if any of you had the same problem? I am getting down liquids slowly but I am sure some of the bloating is due to the inability to pass these liquids. Silly enough, I felt worlds better yesterday than I today. Anything more than the tiniest sip of Water and it feels like a bubble of water is lodged in my throat for a minute or two. It does dissipate, but it's incredibly painful.

Anyway, I just wanted to see if other people had this issue/how they dealt with it/how long it lasted. Thanks

When I first started drinking post-op, I would get the sensation of liquid going through a funnel. Seemed like it would bubble and flow down with a final gurgle once it got there. I am 10 days post-op and finally feel the bloating is going away.

Just take little sips and walk to help move the built up gas from the surgery. As for passing urine, that will take a little bit as well. I did not have an catheter but know from being a nurse that the anesthesia combined with the catheter can lead to urinary retention. That too will pass.

It is true that each day gets a little better.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!!

Perhaps you should try hot liquids such as hot tea or broth. I was told plain Water can create surface tension and can give you that stuck feeling. If you mix the water with lemon or a drink mix it shouldn't happen. The more fluids you can get in, the better.

How much Fluid have you taken in since getting off the cath.?

I hope you have urinated since your post but if not, I urge you to contact your physician immediately.

I hope you are doing better but not being able to urinate is not normal and dangerous.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
