Please Help-Post Op Question

Recommended Posts

Hello. My surgery is scheduled August 2nd. I am scheduled for a CPR class on August 25th. so, a little over 3 weeks later. When I asked my surgeons nurse about doing it, she said she didn't think I'd be able to do the compressions. When I asked my surgeon, he said he didn't think it would be a problem. I need to let my boss know asap, so I thought I would get your opinions. I know it will ultimately be up to me and there's no way to exactly predict how I will feel, but would you have felt up to doing a cpr class at that point after your surgery? It is about 8 hours long....

Thank you so much!

Everyone is different, but I definitely could have done it. But with an eight hour class, you need to plan for your day. Make sure you have plenty of Water to drink and something you can easily eat for lunch. If it were me, I would do a Protein Shake because I know I wouldn't have any issues getting it down. You'll have a better idea of what lunch would work for you after your surgery (tastes and tolerances change) and you can plan for it the week of your class.

Good luck!

I could have done it no problem at 3 weeks out. Tracey is right... make sure you have plenty of Water and a snack.< /p>

I agree with above. I work on an ambulance and am a nurse and at 3 -4 weeks I started back on the ambulance although I couldnt lift yet. It might be uncomfortable for you to get on the floor for compressions but maybe you can try and do them on a table. It all depends, everyone is sooo different. I refused most pain meds postop, but another girl who had it done was in crazy pain for weeks postop.

Agreed. If you plan your day and get plenty of rest the night before this shouldn't be an issue at all. Many people don't even take a full three weeks to recover!

As you know everyone heals different, suggestion besides Water, is if you have a binder, bring it with you. I started going in my pool to walk at 4 weeks, going in no problem, out the gravity and pull on the stomach was great. At 5 weeks I attempted a work-out video, did great until I had to get on the ground and get back up.

I was 7 weeks yesterday and Saturday & Sunday we had trees cut and I was bending a lot hauling small limbs and picking up small branches and I felt like someone punched me in the stomach and my stomach actually looked a little distended so I put the binder on, and I'm doing fine now.

Best of luck to you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
