1St Week Post-Op Question

Recommended Posts

I've been watching some YouTube videos of ppl who are vlogging their VSG experience. 2 have kind of made me nervous. I think they were both pretty young girls - maybe in their early 20s, and during their 1st or 2nd day home they became very dehydrated and had to go to the hospital.

Is this common? I know they both said that they were very nauseous so I assume they didn't drink their Water. However, I've been sick in the past and drank few liquids for a day or 2 and never became so dehydrated I had to go to the hospital.

So is this common? Also did anyone's surgeon send them home with a prescription for an anti-nausea?

If this is common - why is it so easy to become dehydrated after this surgery?

I tend to get nauseous with anesthesia so I spoke with my dr. He gave me a patch to put on night before my surgery (7/17) & I wore it for three days. I had no issues this time.

I can only speak from my experience but they run so much IV fluids thru you during surgery & after you will be fine immediately post-op. Just make sure to follow your dr plan and sip, sip, sip your Water & Protein. You will not want to at first but just focus on Water and you will do fine.

If you are still concerned speak to your dr and NUT about the warning signs of dehydration. Don't be afraid to call then and ask questions. They are there to help you be successful!

Best wishes!

If you are still feeling nauseous in the hospital when you are getting ready to leave, you can ask your doctor to prescribe an anti-nausea med to go home with. I think because you are consciencious (sp?) of becoming dehydrated, you will be diligent in sipping Water all day.

I was given the patch to put behind my ear the night before surgery and also an anti nausea pill to take 3 hrs before surgery. I am 6 days out and have yet to experience any nausea. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
