Pre And Post Sleeve Differences?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I wanted to put this in here since I know that the guys and girls are different and hoping to get some "guy" related answers concerning these questions. Gals you are welcomed to chime is as well, didn't mean that to sound sexist. I promise!!

Anyway. With guys having different metabolisms, hormones, and what not, how much weight loss have you seen with your sleeve and have you experienced as many stalls as a lot of the women talk about?? If so, how long??? Now I know that everyone is different with factors of exercise, tolerances of carbs, etc so I am not looking to say this won't work or anything. I just want to hear REAL experience and REAL numbers.

Are you carb sensitive??

Lactose intolerant??

Can you do spicy foods still??

Do certain smells turn your stomach that didn't before??

Do any normal foods you ate previously not agree with you now??

Any other things you can't tolerate after the sleeve??

I may sound like I am rambling at this point but I am considering the sleeve still. Some of you may have seen me post questions already in the past few weeks so I am still researching and asking questions. I ask simply because of a few concerns with my diet and work etc. I am not lactose intolerant now and really don't wanna be ask dairy is a staple for me. I do well with the cheese, yogurt, and milk on a high Protein low carb diet now. I would hate to see that change as I am not a huge veggie fan. I would be slightly sensitive to carbs, meaning I can eat a sensible amount of good carbs and maintain or be at a slow loss. I don't do junk carbs at all as I start a slow gain. I am not a big junk food eater anyway so I don't really find that to be that difficult. I just like real food, a meat and potato kinda person. Don't really do that many "junk" sweets, I prefer the occasional good homemade stuff lol !!!

Anyway. I wanna hear what you guys that have a sleeve have to say. Still pondering on this sleeve thing guys.....

Ok.. a girl here but I want to answer some of your questions. Some of the questions I never even would have thought of pre-surgey. It soulds like you are trying to make the best decision for you! I as sleeved in April.

Lactose intolerant?? I never had a problem with lactose before surgery. About two weeks after surgery I became very lactose intolerant. I knew that this could happen but was totally surprise that it did to me. I changed my Protein shakes, switched to no lactose “milk”, and kept some lactase pills around just in case. My intolerance has since just disappeared, which seems to be the norm around here. For some people it takes just a few weeks…others a year… and unfortunately some it never goes away. It is also different for each person. Some can’t do milk but have no problems with cheese or yogurt.

Can you do spicy foods still?? Yeppers!

Do certain smells turn your stomach that didn't before?? Yes and of all things it is turkey meat. I can’t stand the way it smells when cooking. I never had a problem with it before.

Do any normal foods you ate previously not agree with you now?? I can eat anything…. but I feel uncomfortable when I eat anything like bread or tortillas so I avoid them for now.

Any other things you can't tolerate after the sleeve?? Not really. food is just food now. I eat it …sometimes I still enjoy it.. but it is just food. This is not something I could have understood before surgery.

I wish you the best of luck!!

I think men lose more than women because of the different biological makeup. Women, by nature, are more prone to holding on to weight because of their child bearing capacity. Lactose intolerant? No. Spicy foods? Absolutely! Chili and salsa go down better than most things. I have trouble eating eggs and most meats, including hamburger. I think it is because of the density of these things. I can get them down, and still enjoy the taste, but I fill up very quickly when eating them and that sometimes lead to a feeling of overstuffed and mild pain for 15 minutes or so. . As for things I liked before, but don't like now, the only thing that fell into that category was a certain brand of fruit shakes that I could hardly stomach after surgery. I gave my oversupply away. For that reason, don't stock up more than a week or so supply before surgery because you may find out you don't like it after. I watch carbs closely, keeping in mind that some carbs are necessary especially if you exercise heavily. I hold to less than 70 carbs per day and burn about 430 calories in exercise (treadmill). I know if I overdue the carbs, I will not lose weight. This surgery was the best decision I ever made and I would do it again, despite the minor changes it has brought in my diet.

I am almost 9 weeks post op and 53 pounds down! I would not change my descion to have the sleeve done....

Let's talk food. I have learned that folks who don't have the sleeve do not understand some of the frustrations of us who do have it. There are quirks, but on my end, I think the results outweigh the quirks. I have a very, and I mean very hard time with soft breads, tortillas and rice. I can actually feel the simple sugars breaking down and causing gas. Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are my devil. I do not touch them at all since being sleeved. Learned my lesson eating them last weekend. My insides felt like an atomic bomb went off.

I had horrible acid reflux before surgery and lived on tums, rolaids and ranitidine. Since surgery, not one episode. Spicy food is iffy with me. Sometimes it makes me feel like it just burning its way thru, other times, going down is way better than the coming out.

I try to maximize Protein, and eat very little carbs. It's not easy, but I try to stay under 40-50g carbs daily. Again, carbs from fruits and some other foods I can tolerate. Cake, pie, anything "sweet", my body HATES! If I eat anything like that, even a bite, I sweat, my heart races and it doesn't stop until I lay down and take a quick nap or wrap a cold towel around my neck.

One thing I also learned, I get annoyed very quick at how others eat now. The smacking lips, finger licking, stuffing food down the throat with out tasting, drives me nuts. I have had to really slow down on going out to eat with others because the sounds and sights make me ill. Smells of food now make my stomach turn, in particular green beans! Fried food I also a big fat no no for me. It sits like a rock in my throat.

I was talking to my parents about all this last night. It seems like a pain in the butt for all this, but I am SO thankful because it's all foods I should it be eating anyways. I stick with a lot of veggies, fruits and grilled meats. I also do well with nuts/trail mix and Jerky. I also live off of pickles, peppadews, banana peppers and cucumbers.

One last thing...I used to love cheese, it makes me extremely ill now. I can still drink milk, so no lactose issues. Another thing that I found out...the textures of foods now can make or break me.

Guy here. I'm only a month and a half out of surgery. No problems with milk or any dairy products. No foods turn my Stomach (yet). My first 3 weeks I was ravenous about food. I thought I was going to be depressed because I couldn't eat certain things. I've learned now that I can eat well and still feel great. Cravings have gone away. What is cool for me is that my wife had the procedure done at the same time and I can see the difference in reactions we have to foods. I think women have a tougher time with foods honestly. There are things that don't agree with my wife that I have no problems with at all. I'm loving this decision more and more everyday!

43 yr old sleeved 4/24, down 67 lbs today. Never a milk drinker, gave up shakes because of nausea. Tried a few sweets and icing made me nauseous right away. Sugar taste in mouth not appealing. Bell peppers don't sit well. Have not had the nerve to try lettuce yet. Last few weeks increased carbs, doing a little bread but in tiny amounts and only once or twice a week. Otherwise no other food issues

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
