Thread Removed? Re:septic

Recommended Posts

Last night I was on this website and came upon a topic regarding the long term effects of a partial gastrectomy. The person was talking about an ER nurse friend that told many stories of people who had this operation having problems with going septic ten years or more down the road. I forgot to follow the post and now can't find it. I am a little freaked out as my surgery is scheduled for Monday the 16th!! Anyone hear this? See this post? Or can help me find it? Ugh, now I am second guessing this surgery and I was so set on it!

I commented on it but I cannot find it either...

I have submitted a question based on her statement to The American Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Association, and I am waiting on a response.

I will follow up when I get one - but I would not worry too much, 10 years out the staples are no longer what is holding you together, from my understanding.

FYI - I recently found this video that mentions leakage as the biggest risk with VSG. However, it's substantially reduced if the surgeon reinforces the staple line. I'm still pre-op and will absolutely make sure my doctor does this.

Yes, the scar tissue heals over the staples and becomes a sealed unit again. The vertical sleeve gastrectomy, as I understand, doesn't even HAVE ten year stats as a stand alone procedure, so maybe this was referring to something else?

Besides....worst case scenario, something happens to your sleeve, or God forbid you get stomach cancer, or whatever, whatever.....they convert you to a bypass.

I found it under Band to Gastric Sleeve revisions. There are other threads when you search on septic.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
