How long did you keep your stitches covered?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on August 22nd. My nurse told me to keep bandages on my stitches for 14 days, my doctor said for 7 days. I changed the bandages yesterday and the incisions look good, but stitches have not yet dissolved and I am afraid to uncover them. I'm wondering if keeping them covered is slowing down the healing, because they aren't getting any air, but I also don't want to get infection.

Any advice would be appreciated.

My Dr. had me keep them on untill they fell off on thier own. It took a couple weeks and I kind of helped them along in the end. They were lokking really gross so I knew it was time.

I had mine on for about two weeks too.....I think they fell off earlier than that though in the shower and everything was just fine.

I was sure to keep the areas clean and keep clean clothes on until I could see that they had healed over for sure.

I had internal (catgut) stitches with steri-strips covering the incision sites. At my 1 week post-op visit, the Nurse Practitioner took the steri-strips off.

My incisions were glued, which I liked so much better. And, I never had any bandages at all.

Tricia,

How are your scars? My surgeon also does internal stitches with steri-strips. I will be banded on 9/12, and was curious how this effected scars.

I removed the bandages after 1 day, but still have the steristrips on. The doc told me that they will fall off. But, I am going for my post-op appointment tomorrow, so we'll see what happens!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
